Interesting to think about also in light of the Mercati Traiano in Rome (and the use of the hillside)!
In the huge Roman forum square of Khamissa, Algeria (ancient Thubursicum Numidarum). Colonnaded rows of shops ran along the sides of the forum, while behind you can see the remnants of the large Trajanic basilica that buttressed the hillside. An incredible site to explore!

Election propaganda is eternal.
Ongoing excavations in Pompeii’s Regio IX area have unearthed the home of Pompeiian political candidate Aulus Rustius Verus. Its interior walls contained 2,000-year-old election propaganda, which was usually found on the exterior of buildings. archaeology.org/slideshow/12…

Ancient marble gravestone for a dog named Parthenope, shown on the memorial relaxing on a fine couch. The epitaph tells us that: 'Here an owner has buried his playful dog, Parthenope, in gratitude for the happiness and mutual love that she brought him.' Parthenope then addresses us directly: 'Having been a friend to my owner, I deserved this grave. Take the example of this memorial, and find yourself a loyal friend who is both ready to love you while you are alive and also care for you when you die.' Roman era, 3rd century AD. From the acropolis of Mytilene, once an islet just off the shore of Lesbos but now connected to the larger island. Istanbul Archaeological Museum.
