Sjoerd has Chinese govt-issued journalist accreditation and a journalist visa. Chinese law protects the rights of foreign journalists invited into the country to do their job. This is lawless thuggery. But not surprising, sadly.
Feb 27: China correspondent of the largest Dutch news organization NOS Sjoerd den Daas was harassed and manhandled by plain-clothes and uniformed 🇨🇳 policemen when he was filming a group of investors protesting outside the HQ of struggling shadow bank Sichuan Trust (四川信托) in Chengdu. He and his cameraman were arrested and detained for a few hours. They were subsequently released. nos.nl/video/2510630-naar-de… nos.nl/artikel/2510629-chine…

After six years, I’ve left @SixthTone. Or conditions were created for me to leave after publishing a project that criticized “zero-COVID,” which landed multiple people in hot water. It’s been bittersweet leaving a place we’ve built over the years but it was time. (A long 🧵)

Feel honored and grateful to be recognised by @Reuters as the Reporter of the Year. It’s especially meaningful for us Chinese journalists working in mainland where we face one of the most difficult journalism environments in the world.
