Deputy Minister Singh is leading South Africaโs high-level engagement at CBD COP17 in Yerevan, as negotiations enter a decisive stage.
As negotiations continue, Deputy Minister Narend Singhโs engagements today demonstrate South Africaโs active participation across COP17โs high-level political, negotiating and implementation processes.
The Deputy Minister is attended the Ministerial Breakfast on National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans, the High-Level Segment plenary and a Presidency-led ministerial discussion. He also participated in the launch of the Nature and People Finance Alliance.
South Africa is strengthening strategic partnerships through bilateral engagements with Brazil, India and Norway, as well as discussions with the Chief Executive Officer of the Global Environment Facility on financing biodiversity implementation.
Presidential consultations are continuing on resource mobilisation and Digital Sequence Information, two critical matters that will influence whether the KunmingโMontreal Global Biodiversity Framework can be implemented fairly and effectively.
South Africa remains committed to constructive negotiations and ambitious global biodiversity action. However, ambition must be matched by predictable and accessible finance, capacity-building, technology transfer and fair benefit-sharing for developing countries.
Deputy Minister Singh delivered South Africaโs Country Statement during Day 2 of the High-Level Segment, setting out the countryโs priorities and its call for an equitable, adequately supported and implementation-focused outcome from COP17.

โIn KwaZulu-Natal, Working for the Coast creates jobs for people whose daily work protects and maintains our coastal environment. That work does two things: it safeguards our natural assets, and it puts money in peopleโs pockets while they gain practical skillsโ - DM Singh.
โEnvironmental degradation, illegal dumping and pollution must not become normal in our communities. Our Environmental Management Inspectors play a vital role in protecting the environmental rights of all South Africans. We need residents to dispose of waste correctly, businesses to manage their waste responsibly, municipalities to deliver services, and young professionals who can help us find better solutionsโ the DM concluded.
