California wildfire costs do not end when the fire is contained. Jeff Ball explains how land management, rebuilding rules, insurance, and utility infrastructure can all affect what residents and businesses ultimately pay. Ball argues that better vegetation management could reduce some wildfire risk, while survivors still face delays getting reimbursed and rebuilding their homes. He also discusses how insurance problems and higher utility costs can make housing more expensive to build. The larger question is how California pays for prevention and recovery, whether through ratepayers, taxpayers, insurers, utilities, or some combination of them.

JUST IN: A federal appeals court declined to intervene in the Trump administration’s lawsuit against California. The DOJ wanted to set aside 20,000 mail-in ballots from individuals it suspects are noncitizens. The DOJ filed an emergency application last week to the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco, asking it to block California from counting the ballots. But a three-judge panel handed down a 2–1 decision, citing lack of jurisdiction to rule on the matter because a lower district court had not yet issued its ruling. The federal appeals court dismissed the DOJ’s emergency motion and remanded the matter back to the lower court, which is scheduled to hold a hearing on Oct. 27. Furthermore, granting the Trump administration’s request would pull election administrators away from their existing tasks to implement a new voter-citizenship verification process to align with the DOJ’s demands, the majority of the judges wrote.

California’s crime culture won’t change until the system does. Former Huntington Beach City Attorney @MichaelGatesESQ argues the state needs to move away from reimagining law enforcement and return to stricter enforcement of existing laws. He lays out why he thinks the change has to start with prosecutors and police leadership. Tags: #California #Crime – at California, USA

Real estate and mortgage insiders say the paradox of having both a surplus and shortage of housing is symptomatic of a deeper problem: The country’s supply is disconnected from where people want and need to live. theepochtimes.com/us/why-ame…

BREAKING: President Donald Trump said that he would provide $1 million to people who can report any instances of voter fraud that lead to an arrest or conviction. “Anybody reporting Voter Fraud in the past Elections, or the upcoming 2026 Midterm Election, will be paid $1,000,000 upon the arrest and conviction of those that created the Fraud!” Trump wrote in a Truth Social post. “I’m also going to be issuing a million dollar bonus or reward or whatever you want to call it for anybody that reports voter fraud, leading to the arrest and conviction of somebody,” Trump told reporters on Monday. “We’re giving that person a million dollars.”

Hotels do not always respond to weaker demand by cutting room prices. Donald Wise explains why many operators would rather let occupancy fall than reduce rates, and how higher interest rates are making hotel projects and refinancing more difficult. Wise says many planned hotels are being delayed because financing costs no longer support the original math. He also explains how capital moving into data centers and AI is changing real estate investment, while existing hotel owners can face a difficult refinancing choice when lenders are no longer willing to extend the same amount of debt. For owners, that can mean putting in more equity, selling the property, or handing the keys back to the lender.

Owning land is more within reach than most young Americans realize. Dr. Jill Malone says rural property is cheap, and remote work makes the move possible. “Rural America right now is dying, and property is cheap.” “You can go to West Virginia, even parts of rural Virginia, and pick up a house and 10 acres.” “Starlink allows you to remote work.” “You do not have to live in the city.” “When you live in a rural community, you have an intentional community.” “Buy the cruddy house, buy a house you can take a little loan on, pay it off rapidly, then you have all that equity.” @JillGMalonePhD
