What a sad end…. So unfair
SHE DIED WAITING
Heather Earley, mother of three, has died waiting for her money. @PostOffice kept her waiting so long she ran out of time. Impressive logistics.
Lawyer @SimonMGoldberg (well worth to give him a follow) shared the sad news today.
Heather Earley was one of 555 postmasters who took the Post Office to the High Court and won, and she died before getting her redress, the money owed to put her life back together.
He points to a @BBCNews article from 2024 on victims who died before getting redress. Winning in court and never seeing the money is a rare talent.
Heather Earley was a mother of three who ran a local shop with a Post Office counter in Mossley, Newtownabbey, in Northern Ireland. In December 2013 the Horizon computer system said she was £10,000 short. A computer said so, and in the Post Office computers are never wrong..
She says one customer kept using a flaw in the system. Every time that customer withdrew £100, the system added £100 to the balance instead of taking it off. I wish my bank worked like that.
Heather Earley called the police, and the customer was prosecuted and convicted. That put the blame on the customer, and the Post Office still demanded the £10,000 from her, took money from her wages and refused to give it back even after the conviction. Crime solved, victim billed ...
She borrowed from family and maxed out three credit cards just to buy stock for the shop. She cashed in £50,000 of her pension to save the house and clear her debts. Her village lost its post office and its shop, a truly generous service to the community.
In 2019 the Post Office settled the group case for £57.75M. Around £46M went on legal and funding costs, which left roughly £20,000 for each of the 555 people. The judge, Mr Justice Peter Fraser, had said the Post Office at times acted as though it answered only to itself, and it seems to have taken that as a challenge.
Reports say at least 350 Horizon victims have died before their final payouts, so at this pace the scheme will finish the moment nobody is left to be paid.
Heather Earley wanted justice and enough money to rebuild what was left of her life. Simon Goldberg says the lawyers and other parties who held up and nickel and dimed her redress should feel nothing but shame, though shame does not appear to be billable. Stop fighting these people and pay them before it is too late.
Heather Earley never got her cheque.
RIP Heather

After 18 years in children’s services, I find this deeply troubling, repeated safeguarding warnings, vulnerable children put at risk, and a doctor who says she was silenced for speaking up. This demands answers. Protecting children must be the state’s first duty. 👇🏽
🚨Hilary Cass has called for an independent inquiry into how Brighton GPs were allowed to prescribe cross-sex hormones to children as young as 12.“There urgently needs to be an investigation of why every system that should have protected children, young people, and indeed young adults has failed,” she told me.
The employment tribunal between Dr Sarah Redvers and NHS Sussex has highlighted how regulators and the NHS collectively failed to stop prescribing of puberty blockers and hormones against national guidelines - for years - and how instead the person raising concerns was accused of transphobia and herself investigated.
Dr Redvers sat down with me for her only newspaper interview about her treatment in a scandal which, Cass now says, “dwarfs” that of the Tavistock’s GIDS.

There’s already a mixed pond ( where you ID however you like) & a men’s pond. There is zero reason for males to be in the women’s pond or women’s changing rooms. Good luck @SexMattersOrg
Sex Matters is heading to the High Court on 3rd and 4th November.
We’re challenging the City of London Corporation’s decision to allow men who identify as women to use the Ladies’ Pond, including its changing rooms and showers.
The City has a lawful option: keep the Ladies’ Pond for women, the Men’s Pond for men and the Mixed Pond for both sexes. We’re asking the court to hold it to the law.

Dan Rather is spot-fucking-on.
Since Trump measures everything through the lens of ratings, I'm sure he'll be very proud when his livestreamed treason trial breaks the internet.
Alastair Campbell, "Steve Witkoff is a disgrace. Tens of thousands of Ukrainian children have been taken to Russia and Steve Witkoff calls Putin a humanitarian"
"The Americans (Trump) speak about Putin in a way which is diametrical to the way they speak about Zelenskyy"
"Trump has decided that this war has to end with Ukraine losing"
"Trump has contempt for Zelenskyy because he's a proper leader with values and integrity, and all the things Donald Trump doesn't stand for"
My view:
Witkoff calling Putin a humanitarian is bad enough. But it fits the way Trump’s team now talks about this war: praise for the man who invaded Ukraine, contempt for the leader defending it.
Trump says he wants the war to end. But if the price of that “peace” is Ukraine losing territory, security and its freedom to choose its own future, then it is not a fair settlement. It is rewarding aggression.
Zelenskyy is a leader fighting for his country’s survival. Trump’s hostility towards him says far more about Trump’s values than it does about Zelenskyy’s.

BREAKING: Mitt Romney Puts Zelenskyy Alongside Churchill and Washington as Trump Pushes Ukraine to Cave
Trump spent the week trying to strong-arm Ukraine into a deal with Putin, and Mitt Romney just answered him with a history lesson.
The former Republican senator and 2012 presidential nominee posted a short, cutting defense of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy that spread across the internet within the hour.
“Churchill could have shortened WW2 by years if he had just ‘done a deal’ with Hitler,” Romney wrote. “George Washington could have done a deal to end the American Revolution. Zelenskyy is in good company.”
Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Anne Applebaum quickly reposted it, and the message pulled in roughly 140,000 views and nearly 8,000 likes in less than an hour.
Standing With Ukraine When It Counts
Romney’s post lands as the relationship between Washington and Kyiv hits a new low. Trump announced a deal on Oct. 9 to buy Russian diesel in an effort to bring down fuel prices before the midterms. Then over the weekend he attacked Zelenskyy directly, claiming the Ukrainian leader doesn’t want to end the war and probably never did.
Zelenskyy has said he believes steps have been taken to convince Ukraine to capitulate.
Romney’s point is simple. Leaders who refuse to surrender to invaders are not obstacles to peace. They are the reason freedom survives. Churchill refused to bargain with Hitler while bombs fell on London. Washington refused to trade away independence through years of brutal war. History remembers both as heroes.
A Republican Who Still Knows Who the Bad Guy Is
Romney has never wavered on Russia. In 2012 he called it America’s number one geopolitical foe and was mocked for it. More than a decade later, he has been proven right again and again.
While much of his party has gone quiet as Trump cozies up to the Kremlin, Romney refuses to pretend Putin is a partner for peace.
Trump keeps talking about deals. Romney is talking about history. And history has never been kind to the leaders who sold out the people fighting for their freedom.

I’ll stipulate that Trump is an agent of Putin.
Go down the checklist.
1. Destroyed the Western alliance? Putin wanted that.
2. Threatened a NATO ally over Greenland? Putin wanted that.
3. Pulled out of the intermediate nuclear pact? Putin wanted that.
4. Withdrawing 25-40,000 troops from Western Europe while Russian bellicosity is rising? Putin wanted that.
5. Russian satellites giving coordinates to Iranians killing our soldiers, and his response is “they kill us, we kill them”? What American president says that?
I think he’s been compromised.
The election of Donald Trump may be the greatest foreign policy success in post-Czarist Russian history.
