I also am very upfront with founders about when 'Trad Media' could still be a better home for their exclusive news, and when we have a real right to win.
Are you optimizing for an in-depth story that explains who you are to potential hires and the community, or do you really need the Tier 1 headline + photo combo to screenshot and post on social media?
Maybe that validation with investors and Big Co buyers matters more In the moment. At some point, most startups will want both.
When a founder asks if they should pursue press coverage at all, I always start by asking what end outcome they hope to achieve.
New Media like Upstarts can increasingly check some of those boxes, but we're all better off when both cohorts flourish.
