“Dear Italian students, who today take to the streets carrying flags with the hammer and sickle and wearing T-shirts emblazoned with ‘CCCP’,” began an open letter in Italian by Lithuanian expat Neringa Budryt.
“I would like to ask you a question: do you truly know what the symbols you carry represent? And do you know what would have happened to many of you had you openly demonstrated in countries living under the oppression of communist regimes?
Let me tell you something. It is easy to display a red flag when, for you, communism is merely an abstract idea of equality, social justice, and rebellion against the system. It is easy to wear a T-shirt with "CCCP" on it when you have never experienced the reality of a communist regime.
We come from that part of Europe where communism was not a T-shirt, a symbol of rebellion, or a romanticized notion of equality. It was the system in which we lived—a system we never chose.
We know the history of Soviet repression, Stalinist purges, the Gulags, and mass deportations. Above all, we know the word "Siberia"—a place to which thousands of innocent people were forcibly deported, simply for thinking differently.
In Siberia—amidst freezing cold, starvation, and forced labor—many lost their lives; those who survived carried the scars of that experience forever. Entire families were torn apart, and generations were denied the chance to live freely in their own homeland.
In the countries of the Soviet bloc, censorship, political police, surveillance, and the suppression of dissent drastically curtailed individual freedoms.
We grew up in a system where state control permeated even our daily lives. At school, we were required to wear the red necktie of the "Pioneers." We were monitored; they tracked where we went and even whether we attended church. Even faith—a choice that should belong to an individual’s own conscience—could become a cause for suspicion.
We used to celebrate Christmas with our windows blacked out, to ensure no one would see us and report us. Because it was forbidden—just like so many other things: jeans, rock music, and all the symbols of a Western lifestyle. My mother returned from a Soviet labor camp. And do you know what happened to her? She was barred from continuing her education because she had been labeled an enemy of communism.
Under a communist regime, you could not protest. You risked arrest, imprisonment, interrogation, persecution—and, in certain historical contexts, even death. In the Soviet Union and other communist regimes, political dissent could cost you your freedom and your life.
Demonstrations independent of the authorities were not a guaranteed right; they were often suppressed by force.
That is why it strikes me to see young Italians proudly displaying the hammer and sickle—symbols associated with regimes that persecuted and imprisoned millions of people.
Today, you are free to take to the streets, shout against the government, criticize institutions, and wave your flags precisely because you live in a democracy that grants you these freedoms. Under an authoritarian regime of that kind, protesting against those in power could have landed you in prison.
This is not about denying the existence of social injustices, inequalities, or the right to fight for a better world. You are free to take to the streets to demand a more just society—but you should not idealize a system that denied so many people the very things you are free to exercise today: the right to choose, to believe, to speak, and to dissent. Before wearing a T-shirt with "CCCP" on it, listen to those who experienced that world. Talk to the deportees and their descendants; read the accounts of those who endured the gulags and forced exile to Siberia. Learn what it meant to be stripped of your freedom, your home, your loved ones—and even any prospect of a normal life—simply because of your background or your beliefs.
Before waving the hammer and sickle, please, study history thoroughly.”

Nearly 4, 000 Russian bombs, missiles and drones launched against Ukraine in just one week.
Even as diplomatic efforts continue, Russia keeps striking Ukrainian homes, energy infrastructure and even the rescuers who come to help.
Putin is showing no willingness to end his aggression. We must increase pressure on Russia and strengthen Ukraine's air defence. Military support for Ukraine must not slow down.
This past week alone, Russia has launched around 1,600 guided aerial bombs, 48 missiles of various types, including ballistic missiles, and nearly 2,300 attack drones against Ukraine. Unfortunately, almost every day, these brutal strikes leave people killed and injured. In the evening, Russian strikes on the Dnipro region killed four people. My condolences to their families and loved ones. Another 22 people were injured, including an 11-year-old girl. In Vinnytsia, a Russian drone struck a high-rise apartment building. Six people were injured. In Kharkiv, the Russians first struck a home improvement hypermarket and then carried out a cynical double-tap strike on the emergency services that arrived at the scene. First responders were injured. There were also strikes overnight on a thermal power plant, substations, coal mines, grain storage facilities, shopping malls, and a postal logistics hub. Damage has been reported in nine regions.
This is how Russia responds to diplomacy and deisolation. And it is very important that support for those who protect lives not diminish alongside the negotiation process. We need to unblock the deliveries of Patriot interceptors already approved by European countries. We need to continue supporting Ukrainian combat aviation to defend against jet-powered “shaheds.” Every such defense package, especially ahead of winter, helps save lives. I thank all partners who provide this kind of support.

Russia’s latest drone attack on a commercial vessel off Romania’s coast, killing one sailor and leaving three missing, marks another Russian escalation in the Black Sea.
My condolences to the victim’s family. My thoughts are with those still missing and their loved ones.
Russia’s repeated attacks on commercial shipping violate international law, endanger innocent lives and undermine freedom of navigation.
Estonia stands in full solidarity with Romania and continues working closely with EU and NATO partners.

Today, Estonia decided to contribute another €10 million through NATO’s PURL initiative, bringing our total contribution through this mechanism to €31 million.
This will help Ukraine obtain urgently needed air defence and ammunition. This year, Estonia’s military assistance to Ukraine amounts to 0.3% of our GDP.
Russian strikes on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure have left hundreds of thousands without power. With winter approaching, this support is vital to protecting lives and keeping essential services running.
The stronger Ukraine can defend itself, the less Russia can dictate the terms of peace.
We must keep supporting Ukraine and increasing pressure on Russia.

Today, I announced my decision to leave the 🇪🇪 foreign service and seek a mandate from the people of Estonia.
I do so with a firm conviction: in March, Estonians will be choosing far more than a new parliament. We will be choosing our country’s course for decades to come.
The stakes could hardly be higher. The security order that has safeguarded our freedom is under attack. Our old economic model is running out of steam. Fear is spreading. Brutality is on the march.
These are not times for mediocrity, complacency or political tinkering.
In stormy seas, standing still is dangerous. Drifting aimlessly is worse. What brought us this far will not carry us forward.
I have devoted my professional life to serving Estonia as a diplomat and civil servant. But I have come to believe that, at this critical moment, political leadership matters more than ever.
We must bring Estonia back into the political heart of Europe. Not merely to have a seat at the table, but to shape the decisions made there. We must have the courage to lead, the wisdom to persuade and the ability to bring others along.
We must also rediscover our economic ambition. A small country cannot prosper by looking inward. We must dare to compete with the world’s best, while ensuring that no one in Estonia is left behind.
Above all, we must remember that freedom in Estonia and Estonia’s freedom are inseparable. Neither can survive without the other. Both must be defended.
I believe in Estonia. We have overcome great odds before. But we have little room for error, and no time to waste.
That is why I am seeking the trust and mandate of the Estonian people. To help steer our country through the storm, safeguard our freedom and secure Estonia’s place at the heart of Europe.

Russia is intensifying its attacks on Ukraine’s export routes.
Its aggression in the Black Sea make it harder to put food on people’s plates across the world.
A Black Sea freedom of navigation arrangement would protect lives and vital supplies.
Ukraine has proposed it. Russia has rejected it.
That is why diplomatic engagement must go hand in hand with sustained pressure on Moscow and support for Ukraine.

Last night, Russia launched 16 ballistic missiles and more than 250 drones against Ukrainian cities, again targeting critical infrastructure and energy facilities.
A clinic, a school, a metro station and residential buildings were damaged. More than 500,000 households were left without electricity.
Russia demonstrates daily that peace is the last thing it wants. Putin seeks to condemn Ukrainians to a winter of cold and darkness through a campaign of terror. He will fail.
We must intensify pressure, strengthen sanctions, deepen Russia’s isolation, and put frozen Russian assets to work for Ukraine.
Every missile launched today must translate into a higher cost for the Kremlin tomorrow.
Another Russian ballistic missile attack came in several waves overnight, and once again, there was no early warning from our partners. They again targeted energy facilities and infrastructure, but a medical clinic, a school, a metro station, and ordinary residential buildings were also damaged. In total, the Russians launched 16 ballistic missiles in a deliberate attack on Kyiv and the Kyiv region. The Russians also launched more than 200 drones of various types, including jet-powered “shaheds,” with attacks spanning from the Kharkiv and Dnipro regions to the Volyn, Rivne, and Odesa regions. Sadly, there are casualties. My condolences to their families and loved ones. Those who were injured are receiving assistance. Overnight and this morning, Russia attacked energy facilities in the Vinnytsia, Volyn, Kirovohrad, Kyiv, Mykolaiv, Zhytomyr, Khmelnytskyi, Kharkiv, Ternopil, Odesa, and Rivne regions. In this one night alone, more than 10 energy infrastructure facilities were damaged, and the lights went out for at least 550,000 families. Repair crews are working at the sites.
Ukraine never wanted this war, and we have welcomed literally EVERY attempt by our partners to bring this war to a dignified end. We have responded positively to EVERY ceasefire proposal. Russia's response, time and again, has been ballistic missiles, “shaheds,” and killings. Putin not only doesn't want to end this war – he doesn't even want to take any steps toward de-escalation. EVERY ONE of our partners has experienced this firsthand when they heard Russia's refusals. And it is crucial to call things what they are. To call the aggressor an aggressor and help Ukraine defend lives. When deliveries of missiles for Ukraine's air defense are blocked while Russia is granted relief or delays in sanctions, this is, unfortunately, a denial of reality on the part of our partners. The reality is that the war continues, and it continues solely because of Russian strikes and Russia's desire to drag this war out. I thank everyone who recognizes this reality and helps Ukraine!
