ALT This paper proposes a proof-of-concept study investigating the possibility of using a cat as a development partner for novice programmers. It is based on the observation that some programmers who are new to the field seem to find cats helpful in the development process. Specifically, we explore whether cats can help novice programmers with three tasks: (1) coming up with variable names, (2) providing feedback on code quality, and (3) acting as a sounding board for ideas. We find that while cats can be helpful in certain situations, they are also harmful in others. For example, they often refuse to cooperate when asked to provide feedback on code quality. In addition, they are often distractible and contradictory, making it difficult for novice programmers to rely on them for help in the development process.
