UNAIDS Country Director South Africa

Joined April 2015
Too often Africa remains last in line for innovation. Last week at #UNGA81, @UNAIDS was pleased to join @NEPAD_Agency, @AU_AMA_, @perryworldhouse, and the Global Council on Inequality, AIDS and Pandemics, in bringing together global leaders to look critically at what it will take to strengthen Africa's local and regional pharma production — to ensure no one is left behind. #UnitedToEndAIDS #GlobalHealth lnkd.in/p/dy3gEjuH

So pleased to meet with H.E. President @duma_boko 🇧🇼 yesterday. Truly humbling to hear him say that even in the current tight financial context, @UNAIDS must be maintained or enhanced because Botswana and other high burden countries need UNAIDS country level support. @BWPresidency #UNGA81 #UnitedToEndAIDS

The Netherlands has been a partner of UNAIDS since its beginnings. At #UNGA81, the Netherlands co-hosted a high-level event with UNAIDS and Botswana to reflect on the future of the Joint Programme and what is needed to sustain the progress of the global HIV response towards ending AIDS by 2030. Pascalle Grotenhuis, Vice Minister for International Cooperation in @DutchMFA, highlighted the results of more than three decades of collective action, and the importance of continuing that partnership. “In the 30 plus years that UNAIDS has existed, a lot has been achieved. This progress shows that a joint AIDS response works.” The Netherlands was there at the start. And, she reaffirmed, it remains committed to ending AIDS today. At #UNGA81, Florence Anam of @gnpplus spoke about why continued UNAIDS political leadership matters to the communities at the centre of the response. “The community work we do cannot be debated. It will exist with your help. It has always existed with UNAIDS political leadership and must continue to.” Watch Florence’s message on the role of UNAIDS leadership and communities in the next chapter of the HIV response.
At #UNGA81, governments, communities, UN leaders and global health partners gathered to discuss the transformation of the Joint UN Programme on AIDS (UNAIDS) and what is needed to sustain progress towards ending AIDS as a public health threat by 2030. The discussion comes as the UN undergoes major reforms and the global health landscape is changing, with countries facing constrained financing, widening inequalities and growing pressure on health systems. For UNAIDS Executive Director @Winnie_Byanyima, transformation is about strengthening country ownership: “Ultimately, transformation is not only about integrating UNAIDS into the UN system, it’s about integrating the AIDS response into stronger national institutions.” Botswana’s Minister of Health Stephen Modise, reflected on what the HIV response has achieved through political leadership, communities, science and partnership. “Our journey has shown what is possible when political leadership, communities, science, and partnership come together with common purpose and coordinated support. We would not have reached this point without the Joint Programme.” As UNAIDS transforms, participants highlighted the importance of preserving the functions that have helped drive progress: political leadership, coordination, accountability, community engagement and support to countries. The message was clear: transformation must help sustain the gains of the HIV response and support countries and communities to finish the job of ending AIDS.

Congratulations on 20 years, @UNITAID. At a time of profound change in global health, your work continues to show that innovation matters only if people can access it. Thank you for two decades of bringing life-saving innovations to the communities that need them most.
“The difference between a treatment that arrives and one that does not is the difference between life and death.” As Unitaid marks 20 years, Executive Director Dr Philippe Duneton says access must be the test of global health. Read the statement: ow.ly/wzKL50ZQvKR #UNGA81

Day 3 of the SADC–China exchange: visits to Biovac & Afrigen showcased Africa's growing vaccine & biotech manufacturing capacity. The opportunity: turn knowledge exchange into practical partnerships, boosting local production, resilient supply chains & health security #SADCChina
Day 3 of the SADC–China strategic exchange included visits to Biovac and Afrigen, with discussions focused on strengthening regional pharmaceutical and vaccine manufacturing capacity and reducing reliance on external supply. Biovac’s experience in vaccine manufacturing and industrial scale-up, alongside Afrigen’s work in biotechnology, mRNA technology and technology transfer, offered valuable lessons for building regional capacity. For SADC, the China partnership creates an opportunity to connect expertise, technology, investment and markets — turning knowledge exchange into practical partnerships that support local production, resilient supply chains and greater health security.

Day 2 took the SADC–China strategic exchange into South Africa’s pharmaceutical manufacturing sector, with a visit to Cipla South Africa. The visit offered a first-hand look at manufacturing capacity, quality standards and production at scale, while opening discussions on local API production, technology transfer, skills development, investment and industry partnerships. With a footprint across Africa and global-access markets, @Cipla_Global also highlighted the potential for stronger regional manufacturing and industry-to-industry collaboration to expand access to quality, affordable medicines. A key takeaway: stronger partnerships can help turn local manufacturing potential into sustainable production capacity and greater pharmaceutical security.

UNAIDS, together with the Government of South Africa, the Government of the People’s Republic of China and the Southern African Development Community (SADC), is convening a strategic exchange on pharmaceutical manufacturing and health security in Southern Africa. From 31 August to 4 September, governments, Chinese pharmaceutical companies, regional manufacturers, research institutions, financing and development partners, and the Global Health Innovation Institute (GHII) are coming together to explore opportunities to strengthen regional production of medicines, diagnostics and health technologies. The exchange will focus on technology transfer, investment, innovation, stronger regional value chains and more resilient health systems. Follow along for moments from the exchange. #PartnersForHealthSecurity #SADCChina #HealthSecurity

Warm thanks to @UNinChina for today's rich exchange in Beijing, chaired by @NadiaRashd @UNFPAChina. In a moment of profound change for the multilateral system, China stands out as a strong pillar of support — voting with 149 Member States to adopt the new Political Declaration on HIV/AIDS and championing South-South solidarity. Thank you colleagues for your insights on how we can further deepen the UN’s relationship with 🇨🇳. #GlobalDev #UnitedToEndAIDS

Communities also spoke honestly about the challenges: persistent stigma & discrimination; funding gaps and needed capacity building for their organizations; the toll on dedicated volunteers who give so much yet remain under-supported; the need for better quality commodities, from condoms and lubricants to sanitary products; and the fear and violence that keep women from testing and care. I am inspired by their courage and resilience, and their commitment to #EndAIDS.
🇨🇳 I heard so much from the community-based organisations working with MSM, sex workers, PLHIV, migrant workers and young people: ✔️ Community-led testing in Beijing showing remarkable progress — with far fewer new HIV cases detected in some settings than a decade ago. ✔️ Innovative internet-based testing, counselling & PrEP delivery — now expanded to integrated testing for HIV, syphilis, HPV and other STIs. ✔️ Peer educators driving partner notification, earlier testing and joined-up prevention across HIV and other STIs. ✔️ Frontline work on triple elimination of vertical transmission of HIV, syphilis & hepatitis B. ✔️ Women reaching women — with dignity, sexual health services, cervical and breast cancer screening, and care.

Last year's cuts in funding had a devastating impact on HIV globally. UNAIDS data showed that PrEP uptake dropped sharply by 38% between 2024 and 2025 in 62 countries. We must protect the progress towards ending AIDS. unaids.org/en/resources/docu…
