First comes the scandal. Then come the explanations, the statements and the requests for forgiveness. After a while, a question begins to be heard: when will he be able to return to ministry? By Marcos Zapata in Spain: evangelicalfocus.com/europea…

Last week my wife and I hosted Vera, who has been volunteering on the eastern frontline in Ukraine retrieving wounded soldiers. She told us of her hurt and incomprehension that US believers would so easily swallow Kremlin narratives. By Jeff Fountain: evangelicalfocus.com/window-…

🇫🇷🔥🧑🏻‍🚒The CNEF, which brings together and represents the majority of evangelical churches and organisations in France, speaks of a “deterioration of the social climate” and points to “the rising cost of living, growing precariousness, the decline in public health and education services, and young people’s anxiety about their future”. This widespread sentiment within French society cannot be ignored; it “deserves to be heard” and must be addressed, including by the churches. However, the Evangelical Alliance “condemns such unacceptable violence in the strongest possible terms. Nothing can justify looting, the destruction of other people’s property or harm to the physical integrity of one’s fellow human beings”. For all the above reasons, the statement continues – which was published on the CNEF website on 20 October – “our thoughts and prayers go first and foremost to the victims: those who have been injured and their families, shopkeepers, craftspeople and employees who have seen their livelihoods devastated, as well as the elected representatives and public officials who have been affected”. 🫱🏻‍🫲🏽🇫🇮⛑️ The range of experiences represented at the conference helped connect local ministry with wider networks of support. Participants could learn from people serving in different denominations, organisations and public services, while recognising concerns and responsibilities they shared. The biblical call to bear one another’s burdens gave a common direction to these encounters. Karl Baroch, a refugee from Pakistan living in Finland, and Wosenu Dandena from Ethiopia provided biblical teaching that grounded the conference in this shared calling. Their contributions reminded participants that those supporting their neighbours also need relationships in which they can share questions, receive encouragement and ask for help. Continuing around the coffee table An initiative to organise local coffee gatherings among those supporting refugees and migrants was launched under the name Lydia Network. Participants committed to bringing helpers together in their own communities to exchange experiences, discuss local needs and support one another. Petra31 will support those who wish to start a group, helping the relationships formed at the conference grow into lasting local cooperation. ⚽🔥🤳🏽It has become quite common for professional footballers to share their faith on social media, but lately some top clubs have also started to communicate on their official channels about how their players live out their faith. The Brentford FC team of the UK Premier League has just released a report on its official website called Football and Faith, where it tells the faith journey of three of his players: Portuguese midfilder Fábio Carvalho, Brazilian forward Igor Thiago, and British midfilder Josh Dasilva. The club underlines “how their shared Christian faith has helped them navigate adversity, support one another and find perspective beyond performances and results”.Some months ago, Chelsea Football Club also addressed on social media the importance of Christian faith for its British and French centre-backs: Trevoh Chalobah and Maxence Lacroix. Both players express how faith has shaped their lives, it is the foundation of what they do, and helps them in the difficult times. 📖🙏🏻🪖 From October 10 to 13, the Fellowship of European Evangelical Theologians (FEET) gathered for its biennial conference. One of the insights that emerged from the conference near Tirana, Albania, was the significant role that each nation's political history plays in shaping contemporary attitudes toward nationhood. For example, those coming from nations with a history of exercising political dominance or asserting national supremacy tend to be cautious about any form of nationalism or patriotism. By contrast, those from relatively young nations that emerged after periods of foreign domination and oppression often seek to redefine these concepts, understanding them not in terms of national pride but rather as expressions of gratitude for their homeland. More broadly, the discussions and interactions throughout the conference seemed to strengthen the awareness of the need for a theology that is both grounded in Scripture and attentive to its historical and cultural contexts. 🇦🇱🔥🙏🏻Evangelicals represent a social minority, but even so, they can make a difference at this time of social upheaval, believes the Evangelical Alliance of Albania (VUSH). “In these days of protests and tension, the Word of God first calls us to become people of prayer. Prayer is our primary way of engaging with the reality we face,” they said in a 15 October statement from the entity, which brings together the majority of Albania’s evangelical churches. “There is power when we come together in prayer, for our hearts unite and seek the face of God and His justice.” The organisation calls on both Albanians and Christians from other countries who are concerned about the situation to pray for “preservation and protection from violence, hatred and division”. It also calls for wisdom for those in government, that they may be guided by “justice, integrity and accountability”.
