First up is the painted bat or butterfly bat. It's native to South and Southeast Asia. They sometimes roost under the nests of birds and their distinctive fur colour mimics dried leaves and flowers, hiding them from predators. (Photos Bob Cornes, Dilan Mandanna)

April 18th is National #BatAppreciationDay. Bats play an important role in many ecosystems around the world. They are crucial pollinators for cactus species and many other tropical plants, they help control insect populations & also disperse seeds! Why are bats important to you?

from when i was a small child i was always fascinated by the homology evident between bat wings and human hands. halloween was always big in my family as its my fathers birthday, so i was exposed to them a lot. they became my favourite very early 🦇🦇🦇

So many great reasons here. I’ll add that if we DON’T care for bats, who will? And if not now when it’s not socially expedient or popular, then when? They don’t only need our protection when it’s convenient for us. Popular or not. Respected for it or not. We must love bats.

Bats are an entrenched, necessary element of nearly every functional ecosystem in the world. We lose them, we lose pollination of hundreds of plants, we lose protection from the disease-carrying bugs they eat, we lose an ecological world we barely understand. #WeNeedOurBats

I live in South Texas, & if it weren't for the insectivores like bats & purple martins, we'd be eaten alive by mosquitos. Thanks, little 🦇 guys!

They’re important to me because they are a flying mammal, and their existence helps us better understand the evolution of flying vertebrates. Also they’re so adorable, look at the beautiful boy! ❤️

I live in Northern Wisconsin so the mosquitos, horseflies, and deerflies are awful but the bats help control it a little bit.

Bats are important to me bc I can remember going outside as a child to watch them at dusk at my grandparents' house, which is surrounded by orchards. I've been a member of BCI for as long as I can remember & will continue to support these flying little wonders 💖🦇
