COVID took one of my best friends Thursday night. Cholly Naranjo was more than a major leaguer, he was family. Our relationship was special despite our almost 50-year age gap. The words didn't come easy. A thread. baseballhappenings.net/2022/…

If there was a Mount Rushmore of ball writers, Ross Newhan would be on it. He was a giant in the biz, a Hall-of-Famer who spent much of his 43-year career covering @MLB for the LA Times. He was a mentor to myself and so many others, a friend to all. Ross died today at 89. RIP💔

No time left to consider...time to: FLIP THE BALLOT AND VOTE NO - ALL 5
If you are in NYC, consider voting NO on all of the 5 ballot proposals. Remember, this not only locks in the power for the current mayor, but all future mayors, both Democrat and Republican.

it’s not every day you see your name on the byline! Ask yourself - is that Amazon mini truck really a “bicycle”, or are our streets being increasingly turned over to corporate interests?

The 1980 MLB MLBPA Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) created a rule change for pension eligibility, lowering the requirement from four seasons to 43 roster days. However, this change was not retroactive, meaning players from 1947 to 1979 who had more than 43 days of service time but fewer than four full seasons were not eligible for a pension under the new agreement. There are currently 466 known living players who are not vested in the pension program because of this. There have been NINE CBAs since that have put this shrinking list of former MLB baseball players Out In The Cold. Great article on this by @OfficialMLBRFC ballnine.com/2021/10/01/cold…

Great teammate, quality human being. I never met anyone who didn’t enjoy being his teammate and friend. Very sad
Heartbroken to learn of the passing of Todd Benzinger. Todd and I were roommates when we played professional baseball together in the minor leagues. I got to see up close the kind of man he was. A tremendous teammate, and one of the kindest people I’ve known in this game. He made everyone around him better, and treated people with great respect. My thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and everyone who loved him. 🙏

With mortgage rates over 7% and co-op fees increasing ~10%/yr ... less buyers can qualify at current prices, especially when a lot of the buildings have 25-30% maximums as a percentage of gross income.
I looked at yet another midtown condo on Sunday, and the agent for the seller was almost gleeful about how much value it had lost, saying "she" (the owner) bought it in 2018 for $800ish k, now she's trying to sell it for $700ish k but she'd take a lower offer, etc. etc. I thought it was strange to be that excited about it. I didn't like the the apartment anyway.

Co-op owners are under a lot of pressure in all 5 boroughs due to rising building insurance, local law 97, and property taxes. Many owners aren't rich by any means, but are really getting hurt by these unsustainable annual increases that well outpace inflation and city raises.
I deal with these buildings for a living. The main reason Manhattan prices have dropped is operating costs, including regular R&M, Capex, insurance, and compliance. Prior to 2020, a typical condo or co-op increased monthly dues by 2-3% yearly, with occasional assessments for large Capex. Since 2020, many buildings have had to raise monthlies by +10% in consecutive years. Insurance has skyrocketed, with many buildings seeing +50% YoY increases and insurers exiting the market. Labor laws now favor litigation more. Compliance and local laws (i.e., energy-related) force buildings to choose between large Capex spending or just eating large fines. I’m actually impressed by how resilient NYC values remain despite these massive rises in building operating costs.

This is where I think PE teacher prep wins. We are in the classroom starting sophomore year, usually doing small group instruction at least 1x/wk & progressing from there. We student teach at both elementary and secondary before graduating.
you can see from the comments how varied our teacher prep programs are & why so many new teachers struggle with even the basics of instruction. no we didn’t all have a practicum/field work, a year of student teaching, access to curriculum, or work that aligned theory& pedagogy

Teacher / coaches should not be required to take on CDL responsibilities, i.e. driving a bus. It's a liability not worth having just to get the small coaching stipend.

There's an ILL story behind this jawn bro...I was working at 88.9 & talking to their label rep and basically they only had Creep With Me and it blew up and the label gave them SEVEN DAYS to make an entire album which is why there's like 93 versions of Creep With Me on this jawn.
I bought the album cuz of Where My Homiez & I'll Take Her.... I have nobody to blame but myself.

City Council & Mayor already fast-tracking giveaways to private entities w/outdoor dining, CitiBike racks, deliverista bike lane expressways. What’s next? Selling off public parks to casinos under the guise of “affordable” housing? Oh wait, they did that already. Vote NO to #3

Related, and another reason you should never compare your success to the success of others: People WILDLY underestimate how many folks are living in Manhattan in a nice place, with multiple kids in private schools etc, even though their jobs don’t cover it. How is this possible? Their parents pay for it. Nothing wrong with it, but it’s the reality.
When I was in sixth grade, our science class did an egg drop project. The assignment was to build something that could protect an egg when it was dropped from ceiling height. I was really excited and spent full weekends trying to come up with the perfect design. I think I ended up cutting open a Nerf football, making a little space for the egg, and putting that inside a box stuffed with paper. I was convinced it would work. Then the contest started. My egg was dropped and broke completely. As the day went on and the other kids had their turns, I realized I was the only kid in the class whose egg broke. The other kids had come up with these brilliant designs, and I vividly remember being shocked when one girl had her egg suspended inside a box using pantyhose. How did she think of that? How did I not? I remember feeling devastated, as I’d put so much time and effort into this thing, and I was the only kid who failed. And I got a C on the project. I couldn’t understand how the other kids had come up with such great ideas when mine didn’t work at all. I carried that memory with me for years and remembered it as a story about putting your heart into something and then coming in dead last. Only years later did I look back and realize that I was the only kid whose parents didn't do the project for them. I was a 12-year-old competing with adults, had no idea it wasn't an even playing field, and there were consequences. It had a big impact on me at that impressionable age. There are a lot of life lessons in that egg drop project.

My thinking on politics has changed a little over the past couple of years ... it's like, you all can complain about Mamdani and Hochul all you want (and you probably should!). But *they* are not the problem. It is the people who are the problem -- it's not even to blame the people because that's too simplistic, but it's that their expectations, concerns, fears and desires have changed, which leads them to discount this level of random public crime and disorder, which would have been unacceptable seven years ago. What will make them care about this level of random public crime and disorder again? I'm just not sure. Public expectation that the city can control random crime and disorder is now underrealistic, whereas public expectation that the city can control the cost of living is overrealistic. Why?
