Encoding to make decoding permanent. I gave my kiddos the onset of a word, with a picture depiction of the word. They said the word out loud. They wrote the word by using the sound-spellings we learned. They found the rime of the word on the rug to complete the shape (These are my movers and keep attentive if given the chance to move a bit). They had SO much fun!

I'm struggling with the disconnect between instruction and the student practice. "I can't read" is a very telling statement from a child... and one that often has a solution.
