▪️Iran in 1979 should have been the warning that West could never afford to ignore. Islamists and Marxist factions found common ground in their hostility to the existing order, despite profound differences over what should replace it. Their convergence helped bring down a government. It did not deliver freedom. The Islamist leadership consolidated power and turned on its former revolutionary allies.
47 years of repression, torture, executions, corruption and the export of militant ideology should have made the lesson unmistakable: “A movement’s opposition to an unjust system does not make that movement just.”
And now we know the system wasn’t even unjust. That was another lie by left.
Yet that lesson remains dangerously easy to forget.
Long before the Iranian Revolution, Soviet and Maoist propaganda sought to turn discontent in Western societies into ideological allegiance. Its appeal drew on some real and some even made up grievances, inequality, exploitation and alienation, then offered an explanation in which capitalism accounted for every failure and revolution promised every remedy.
The deception was not the belief that people deserve equal dignity. They do. It was the promise that surrendering individual freedom to a supposedly virtuous political project would produce equality without creating a new ruling class.
Under that logic, personal responsibility becomes an insult, disagreement becomes evidence of moral corruption, and those claiming to speak for the oppressed place themselves beyond criticism. A doctrine that begins by challenging power ends by demanding unquestioning obedience to its own.
❗️This is how authoritarian ideas gain a foothold: Through the gradual acceptance of excuses. Censorship becomes protection. Intimidation becomes resistance. Violence becomes liberation, provided the perpetrators use the approved vocabulary.
The distinction that matters is between confronting injustice and exploiting it to justify another form of domination.
A democratic society must be capable of recognising both.
The modern history and what is unfolding in western societies today brings this question to mind: How much ground can an authoritarian ideology gain before the people defending its advance recognise what they are helping to build?
