The State Fair is not only tons of fun, but it’s also a celebration of North Carolina agriculture and the people who make it such an important part of our state. @FLONC and I enjoyed spending time with farmers, checking out what’s new at the fair, and celebrating the traditions that bring North Carolinians together. Agriculture is the backbone of our economy, and the State Fair is a great reminder of all the people and hard work behind it.

Some of @FLONC's and my favorite moments from last year’s @NCStateFair! We had a great time, and we’re looking forward to being back this year. Hopefully, I’ll beat Anna in the Water Balloon Gun Race this year.

I recently checked picking grapes by the moonlight off my bucket list! 🍇 Did you know harvesting grapes at night ensures they have a higher sugar content? I learned this and more when I joined the Marked Tree Vineyard team in Flat Rock as they harvested grapes for their Lemberger wine. We gathered about 5 tons of grapes!

Everyone must feel safe every day wherever they are, including inside their homes. Domestic violence is a horrific crime that inflicts physical and psychological harm on victims. We need to support survivors so everyone lives their life free from fear and abuse. October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month in North Carolina. By working together, we can build a culture where intimate partner violence is not tolerated.

I was fortunate to have Sofia Lilly give me a tour of Overmountain Vineyards, which her parents Frank and Lita co-founded more than 25 years ago in Tryon. This woman- and veteran-owned winery grows grapes for French-style wines on more than 18 acres adjacent to the Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail.

.@FLONC and I cast our ballots today in Raleigh on the first day of early voting in North Carolina. The right to vote is the fundamental right that underpins all of our other rights, and our government works best when everyone does their part. Make your plan to vote now.

Bob and Karen Binns founded Parker-Binns Vineyard in Tryon as a place visitors could become friends, listen to great music, and enjoy a view of the Blue Ridge Mountains. I felt all that and more during my recent visit. Bob, his daughter Kelly, and his grandson Cory taught me about Polk County’s wine growing history and how their family is carrying on this tradition. I left feeling like I had known them for years!

In Chimney Rock, @FLONC and I recently spent time with local business owners, students, and community members to see their progress firsthand and hear about the work underway to rebuild stronger and more resilient. I’m grateful to all the people who are working tirelessly to bring this gem of a community back.

Mountain Brook Vineyards owners Vickie and Jonathan Redgrave have created a place where everyone is welcome. Adults can enjoy the vineyard’s award-winning wines, kids can run around and play, and dogs can enjoy a “treat flight.” They’re also focused on sustainable tourism practices for long-term success in the region, and I appreciate their dedication.

Hope. Love. Determination. That’s what I’ve seen from the people of Marshall and throughout western North Carolina, and that spirit will continue to guide the community as we rebuild for the long haul, brick by brick.

Designated in 2025, the Tryon Foothills American Viticultural Area (AVA) has a thermal belt that creates a uniquely stable environment for growing grapes. Thousands of visitors flock to Mountain Brook Vineyards, Parker-Binns Vineyard, and Overmountain Vineyards to enjoy world-class wine and family-friendly atmospheres while taking in the beautiful scenery and visiting local small businesses like Looking Glass Creamery. Tryon Foothills is the third of North Carolina’s seven AVAs I have visited, but it won’t be the last time.   📍Mountain Brook Vineyards, Tryon 📍Parker-Binns Vineyard, Mill Spring 📍Overmountain Vineyards, Tryon 📍Looking Glass Creamery, Columbus

Just 88 days after his old house was torn down, Dennis had the keys to a brand-new home in Leicester. It was great to see Dennis walk through his new home and hear what this moment means to him and his family. I’m grateful for Renew NC’s efforts to help families rebuild after Hurricane Helene.

The remnants of Hurricane Isaias dumped a lot of rain on western North Carolina overnight, but the rest of the state isn’t out of the woods yet.

As Hurricane Isaias brings the potential for localized flooding and gusty winds this weekend, I encourage everyone to prepare now. Make sure you’re signed up for local emergency alerts, have an emergency kit ready in case you lose power, and never drive through flooded roads. @NCEmergency Management is prepositioning resources across the state so they can respond quickly if communities are impacted. Take care of your loved ones, and check on your neighbors, too.

North Carolina, our team is closely tracking Hurricane Isaias and any impacts that may come our way. Rainfall, which could be heavy in some locations, is expected to start in the western part of the state overnight Friday. As rain moves across North Carolina Saturday and Saturday night, the greatest flash flooding threat is across portions of western NC and southeastern NC.  Make sure you have emergency alerts turned on, are paying attention to local forecasts, and visit ReadyNC.gov for emergency preparedness information.

The progress in Lansing is real, and so is the spirit that has helped this community rebuild. We’ll continue to partner with Lansing and other communities across western North Carolina to help them recover and rebuild.

Josh and I extend our heartfelt condolences to Governor Jim Martin and his family for the loss of First Lady Dottie Martin. I distinctly remember when she established NCDOT’s wildflower program to beautify our highways. She was a lovely person who also used her platform as First Lady to support young people affected by drug use and sexual violence. As a North Carolinian and as First Lady, I am so grateful for Dottie Martin's life and the impact she made across our state.   In memory of Dottie, I placed a bouquet of wildflowers in the Executive Mansion’s Ladies’ Parlor. Flags at state facilities across North Carolina will be lowered at half staff until sunset Monday, October 5, in her honor.

September is Gold Star Families Month, a time to honor the families of fallen servicemembers and remember the extraordinary sacrifice they have made for our country. It was an honor to welcome Gold Star Families and Families of the Fallen to the People’s House. Their loved ones’ service and sacrifice will never be forgotten, and North Carolina will continue to stand with these families and support them all year long.

Josh and I had fun hosting a celebration honoring Hispanic and Latino Heritage Month. Hispanic and Latino communities give so much to the cultural and economic fabric of North Carolina and we were happy to shine a spotlight on these contributions.
