Last week I had the amazing opportunity to visit the bed of the Forth and Clyde canal, which has been drained for the first time in 230 years 🤯 Alongside @MartinRhodes21, I met with colleagues from @ScottishCanals and @MackenzieConstr to learn about the incredible work being undertaken at the aqueduct.

The scale of pollution in UK rivers is undeniable. The Angling Trust’s Water Quality Monitoring Network has collected over 12,000 water samples across the country, revealing persistent nutrient pollution and declining river health. Anglers are witnessing these problems first-hand and collecting the data to prove it. The findings have been highlighted in @thetimes, bringing more attention to the crisis facing UK rivers. Fantastic to welcome @ScotGovRural Ministers Mairi Gougeon MSP and @JimFairlieLogie to Rottal, with thanks to @DeeWardRottal for hosting us. Lots discussed, but most importantly, it was great to showcase the work landowners like Dee are doing to help rural Scotland thrive!

We had a spotty surprise on a recent visit to Wensleydale in North Yorkshire. While some of the local rivers have dry periods, we wouldn't usually expect to see one without water in the autumn time. Here, @ProfJGrey encounters a very tenacious fish 🐟

One of the great things about living near the Forth at this time of the year is the geese migration. Tonight’s showing was one of the best I’ve seen in years. Here’s a short snippet.

Happy #WorldLakeDay! Scotland’s only “lake,” Menteith, stands out amongst the Forth Basin’s 578 lochs. Why “lake”? A 19th-century map mis-translation of Laich (Gaelic for "low place"). Explore all 579 water bodies at our beta FORTH2O Data Lab: forth2odata.stir.ac.uk/

The rivers around the Forth face many pressures which impact salmon, eels, otters and other wildlife. Some pressures also impact communities that live along our rivers too. Find out about these pressures and how we are tackling them in our feature film youtu.be/YYhYl7A2lNg
