Friday #nature notes from Richmond Park. As the nights draw in, Park wildlife like insects, reptiles and amphibians, bed down for the winter, seeking leaf litter and deadwood to hibernate. Dead hedges, like this one in Two Storm Wood, provide refuge and drive decomposition.

#throwbackthursday - Pembroke Lodge in Richmond Park started as a humble mole-catcher’s cottage, but grew to considerable grandeur by the time Elizabeth, Countess of Pembroke, 🖼️, after whom it is named, lived there in the 1780s and 90s.

#DailyPictureTheme Tiny- Richmond Park’s tiniest creatures include the weird and wonderful slime moulds. They spend most of the year as invisible single cells, but in wet Autumn and Winter weather they come together to produce tiny but visible fruiting bodies on leaves and logs.

#WallsOnWednesday The wall around #Richmond Park was originally built from 1635 to 1637 by King Charles I to keep deer in the newly created Park. Local people were allowed in via ladderstiles, but it was John Lewis who fought for and won permanent right of access for all.

Great deer photography starts with the welfare of the deer. Find out how to photograph deer responsibly by reading our Deer Photography Code of Conduct: bds.org.uk/photography/photo…
Even the photographers seem to have lost the plot. This lady set up her tripod within 10m of a fairly active stag strutting and roaring....

#throwbackthursday #RichmondPark history. King Henry’s mound is a Neolithic tomb, 4-5,000 years old, on the edge of the Park. King Henry VIII was reputed to have seen the signal of Anne Boleyn‘s execution from it. A scheduled monument from 2020, its view of St Pauls is famous.
