Meet @FloridaState's newest storm-chasing scientists! ⛈️ On Oct. 9, @FSU_EOAS students Tan Dao (left, photo one) and Diego Barbero (right, photo one) boarded a @NOAA P-3 aircraft and flew into Hurricane Isaias, giving them a firsthand look at how scientists collect data to improve forecasts, inform the public and protect communities. Dao is pursuing a master's, while Barbero is working toward a bachelor's, both in meteorology. To check out the full story, visit: fla.st/2602K3J8. 📸 (All provided by Tan Dao) @FSUResearch @NOAA_HurrHunter

How field trips can look when you're a student at @FloridaState... 😎 Ming Ye, a professor in @FSU_EOAS and faculty affiliate of @FSUSciComp, recently provided students in his Principles of Hydrology course the opportunity to kayak and canoe the Lake Jackson Aquatic Preserve — only a 20-minute drive from FSU. Lake Jackson is the only freshwater lake system in Florida unaffected by engineering constructions such as dams and canals. Instead of using manmade means to manage the ecosystem, Lake Jackson periodically dries out, which spurs a self-cleansing process that hinders invasive plants and restores conditions for native fish breeding, for example. In getting up close and personal with the lake, students learned more about watersheds and how their quality and quantity can evolve over time. The field trip was preceded by a guest lecture from @LakeJackson850's Sophie Wacongne-Speer, who spoke about the lake’s past, present and future conditions. The students' kayaks and canoes were provided by the Lake Jackson Aquatic Preserve under @FLDEPNews. To learn more about Ye's hydrology research, which was recently funded by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, visit: fla.st/OMVOHZMT. 📸 Ming Ye and Laura Short

Got a question about astrophysics, neuroscience and GLP-1s, the weather, or coral reef ecology? 🤔 @FSUartssciences experts on these topics will be available for questions during the next Ask a Scientist event this Friday, Oct. 2! As part of @RailroadSquare's monthly First Friday festivities, Ask a Scientist brings research to the public, and you can find our experts near the Breezeway Plaza from 6-9 p.m. ▶️ David Collins (top left), a professor in @FSUPhysics, researches the formation of stars by simulating magnetized turbulence in space. ▶️ Linda Rinaman (top right), a distinguished research professor in @FSUNeuroscience and @PsychologyFSU, studies the neurological mechanisms behind food intake, specifically the GLP-1 system. ▶️ Robert Hart (middle left), a professor of meteorology in @FSU_EOAS, conducts research on tropical cyclones, synoptic-dynamic meteorology and more. ▶️ Ryan Truchelut (middle right) earned his doctorate in meteorology from @FloridaState in 2015. Shortly after, he co-founded WeatherTiger, a Tallahassee-based company that provides customized seasonal weather forecasts and full-spectrum decision support for a wide range of markets. ▶️ Amy Baco-Taylor (bottom right), a professor of oceanography and environmental science in @FSU_EOAS, studies deep-sea coral ecology, marine molecular ecology and more. For event details, visit: bit.ly/4hikfae. @FSUResearch

Congrats to @FSU_EOAS' own @alli_wing, who has won the Atmospheric Sciences Ascent Award from @theAGU! 👏 The award is presented annually, recognizing research and leadership excellence in mid-career atmospheric and climate scientists. "I'm incredibly honored to receive the award, because it's earned based on the perception of my research by my colleagues in the field," Wing said. Wing is an associate professor of meteorology and environmental science at @FloridaState, and her work centers on tropical cyclones and tropical convection. ⛈️🌀 "The overarching theme of my research is the clustering of tropical clouds and thunderstorms — its different forms, driving mechanisms, influence on broader climate, and role in tropical cyclone development. For example, recent research from my lab found that interactions between clouds and thermal radiation accelerate tropical cyclone genesis and intensification." Hot now, cold later? 🌡️ The present El Niño event is predicted to be the strongest on record, and many areas across the U.S. have been feeling the heat. However, it foreshadows an unusually cold and rainy holiday season in the South as El Niño reaches its full strength during the wintertime. To learn more, check out the recent @nytimes article featuring Alyssa Atwood, an associate professor in @FSU_EOAS: nyti.ms/46yYooD. @FloridaState @FSUResearch

What's that over there? Oh, that's just a rapid-scan X-band polarimetric mobile radar, or RaXPol. Students in this fall's Radar Meteorology course, taught by @FSU_EOAS' Chelsea Nam (pictured in photo one), got to officially deploy @UofOklahoma's RaXPol at @FSUMarineLab! The mobile, truck-mounted radar is on a two-week journey in the field, where it will track weather data from the ground. The opportunity for students to assist in deployment planning as well as data collection and analysis is part of a newly awarded @NSF grant supporting atmospheric science research. To learn more about the @FloridaState Department of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Science — including Nam's Tropical Cyclone and Radar Research Lab — visit eoas.fsu.edu. @FSUResearch

Back in 2014, @NOAA scientists set out to map previously undocumented areas of the Gulf and found what are now known as tar lilies — rare, flower-shaped sculptures made by natural asphalt seeping up through cracks in the seafloor. Emily Powell, a state climatologist in @FSUCOAPS, was recently interviewed by @TIME! Spurred by warm temperatures in the Pacific Ocean, El Niño events typically bring colder, rainier conditions and fewer Atlantic hurricanes in the southern U.S. The current El Niño event is projected to be the strongest on record, reaching peak strength this November and December. To hear how Powell recommends preparing for a "Super El Niño," visit: bit.ly/4gL9vQb. @FloridaState
