American Stephen Hubbard was wrongfully detained in Russia by Putin's government according to the US State Department. Today the Trump administration secured his release and envoy Witkoff praised Putin.
"He's a 75-year-old man and you talk so much about my president being a humanitarian, you are a humanitarian also, sir. I salute that, I commend you , and I thank you again," envoy Steve Witkoff.

Correction: I mischaracterized Rep McCaul's position. He clarified to CBS after this Rep Turner interview that the president's actions on Ukraine are impacting Republicans' decisions, but Rep McCaul has not made a decision to withhold his vote on the president's agenda items during the lame duck in protest.

"I wish I would have called Marco," Senator Cramer (R-ND) says he doesn't know "who's calling shots" in the Trump administration's Ukraine and Russia policy. "But at the end of the day, I think the president is, you know, it's where the buck stops."

Democrats continue to hold an edge over Republicans in voters who say they will definitely cast a ballot in the midterm elections, according to CBS News polling. @SalvantoCBS says Republicans who say they have been hit hard by inflation aren't necessarily shifting their support to Democrats, but may not turn out to vote.
New CBS News polling shows a tight 51%-49% Senate race in Texas between Democrat James Talarico and Republican Ken Paxton, with Talarico performing better among independents and voters who say they're struggling financially because of higher prices.
@SalvantoCBS says Texas is part of an expanded Senate battleground map for Democrats, with traditionally Republican-leaning states like Ohio and Alaska now rated toss-ups, while Iowa and Kansas are also competitive.

Asked whether he would withhold support for President Trump’s legislative agenda over the administration's decision to waive some sanctions targeting Russia, GOP Rep. Mike Turner says, “I don't think there's any brinkmanship that needs to have to occur on this.”
Turner called for further discussions over the waivers and criticized European countries for continuing to purchase Russian energy, saying Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy “needs to come to the table loudly.”
With Texas emerging as a competitive Senate battleground, CBS News Executive Director of Elections and Surveys @SalvantoCBS breaks down how Democrat James Talarico could attract traditionally Republican voters.
Asked about his wife handing out $10 gas gift cards in predominantly Black areas of Detroit, Michigan Republican Senate candidate Mike Rogers told @edokeefe she paid for them out of pocket and was trying to raise campaign awareness.
O’Keefe: “He also made the point that she was doing this in Black areas of Detroit. He has made a concerted effort to reach out to Black voters in that city, believing that there is softness for El-Sayed.”
A longtime Trump-supporting Kansas farmer is considering voting Democratic for the first time over the administration's decision to allow more beef imports, @CHueyBurns reports.
Huey-Burns says economic pressures, including rising diesel costs and frustration with incumbent Republican Sen. Roger Marshall, are creating a “perfect storm of complications” for the GOP in Kansas, where no Democrat has won a Senate race since 1932.
With just over two weeks until the midterm elections, Democrats are seeing opportunities in traditionally Republican states like Texas, Kansas and Iowa, as concerns over the economy and voter turnout create challenges for the GOP.
@SalvantoCBS, @CHueyBurns and @edokeefe discuss the key Senate races and the issues shaping voters' decisions ahead of Election Day.
GOP Sen. Kevin Cramer says Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was “enthusiastic” about a proposal crafted by Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Roger Wicker to expand Ukraine's access to the U.S. military's Starshield targeting capabilities in exchange for halting strikes on Russian energy facilities.
Cramer, who recently met with Zelenskyy in Ukraine alongside Wicker, said Zelenskyy told them, “I would absolutely stop attacking Russia's energy facilities if I could have access to targeting capabilities.”
Cramer also said Secretary of State Marco Rubio “and others are involved with it, including Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner” and that conversations with White House, Pentagon and State Department occurred before their meeting with Zelenskyy.
Sen. Kevin Cramer (R-ND) says he hopes President Trump will impose tariffs on China over its purchases of Russian oil, even after the midterm elections.
“Speaking of thugs…Xi Jinping is another one,” Cramer says, arguing the U.S. needs to take a tougher approach to negotiations with adversaries. “We have to start playing nice with our friends and treating our adversaries like they are adversaries.”
GOP Sen. Kevin Cramer says he agrees with his Republican colleagues who have criticized President Trump's decision to waive sanctions targeting Russia and buyers of Russian oil, warning that “capitulating to a bully generally means they’re going to make more demands going forward. That's the problem with taking sort of a business negotiation approach to negotiating with a thug, which is what Vladimir Putin is. So, I share those colleagues' positions on it.”
“I also have to acknowledge that we are a couple of weeks from an election. One of the important topics of the election is the cost of diesel fuel,” Cramer (R-ND) says. “I expect this will be a short-term pause, and I certainly hope so.”
Pope Leo XIV led the traditional Sunday Angelus prayer from a Vatican window overlooking St. Peter’s Square, just five days after undergoing surgery to remove a cancerous nodule from his lung. The 71-year-old pontiff smiled and greeted the crowd, thanking well-wishers for their prayers and the medical staff who cared for him during his hospital stay.
