Insupportable.

Hosting a model yourself doesn't guarantee your data stays with you. Once the model has a terminal, the question becomes: is it allowed to reach the network?

My take: hosting a model yourself moves the black box behind your firewall, it doesn't open it. The boundary is network egress denied by default, not the license. And displayed reasoning isn't a security control.

On October 26, OpenAI launched GPT-6.1 Terra, a fast model built for computer use: filling out forms, reading technical drawings, editing videos. API pricing: $1 per million input tokens, $0.05 for cached input, $5 for output, 50% less than GPT-5.6 Terra and GPT-6.1 Sol. OpenAI's example speaks to accountants: reading incoming invoices and entering their details into accounting software. According to OpenAI, Terra performs on par with GPT-6 Astra on the Agents' Last Exam benchmark at one-tenth its price per token, and completes tasks more than three times faster than Astra and Sol. On its internal benchmark of error-inducing prompts, the error rate drops from 53.6% to 16.7% at low reasoning effort, and falls to 4.3% at maximum effort. BleepingComputer reports the same figures. OpenAI also rates the model at the "Critical" cybersecurity threshold of its Preparedness Framework, with the protections developed for GPT-6 Astra. What's still open: all these scores come from OpenAI, and no independent test has been published yet. And an error rate measured on trick prompts says nothing about the error rate on your invoices. My take as an accountant: data entry will soon cost almost nothing, review will always cost something. A misread invoice means a supplier paid twice or VAT deducted by mistake. Before automating, I'd set three things: which invoices the agent enters on its own, which ones go through a human, and who reconciles the entries against the statements every month. The gain is measured after that review, not on the price per token. Who will review what your agent enters into your books?

On October 20, two Ubicloud engineers, Jesse Donkervliet and Junhao Li, published a write-up on a problem people who host an open-weight model know without naming it. Serving Kimi K2.6 with vLLM 0.28, they got a tool call matching the expected schema only 92% of the time: 2 calls out of 25 failed. Every failed call pollutes the context, forces the agent to retry, and pushes the bill up. The fix is called constrained decoding: at each step, the inference engine only allows tokens that keep the call valid. With the option turned on, Ubicloud measures 100% schema accuracy on Moonshot AI's K2VV ToolCall benchmark, with the recent Kimi and DeepSeek models. The catch: vLLM doesn't turn it on by default. The engine serves many models, and users of gpt-oss-20b, Qwen 3.6, and GLM 5.1 reported problems when the constraint was on. vLLM's documentation describes the --tool-strict-level server option, which lets the operator enforce it on every request that carries tools, even when the client asks for nothing. What's still open: these are measurements by Ubicloud, which sells hosting for these models, on its own deployments. And the gain depends on the model: on others, the constraint degrades the output. My take: when a local model disappoints, people are quick to blame the model. Often it's the serving stack that holds it back: the engine, its version, its options. Before comparing two models for an agent, I'd measure the rate of valid tool calls on my own engine, setting by setting. A published benchmark only holds for the engine that produced it. Does your inference engine constrain your agents' tool calls, or does it trust them?
