If there’s one thing I wish I had done differently when I was hit by a stroke last January, it would be to go to the hospital immediately, within the Golden Hour (<4.5 hours), instead of thinking I could just sleep it off. This “nothing will happen to me” attitude is common, especially among those under 50. But the truth is, strokes are rising sharply, up to nearly 30% of all strokes in the last few years, among 30 to 50-year-olds. When it comes to strokes, time is brain; every minute counts. Thanks to @timesofindia for featuring this on World Stroke Day today.

Engaging in creative, skill-based activities like dance, music, visual arts, or gaming can reduce your brain's biological age by ~6 years. Researchers measured the 'brain age gap' (the difference between predicted and actual brain age) and found that creative experts had significantly younger brains. This expertise translates to greater neural connectivity in brain regions responsible for motor control, precise timing, mental imagery, and salience detection. They also had more efficient local and global neural networks, which is a signature of robust cognitive function. Healthy brain aging isn't just about nutrition and exercise protocols. Deliberately challenging your brain with creative and skill-intensive pursuits profoundly enhances neural resilience and longevity.

How the brain talks to the immune system This diagram shows the inflammatory reflex - a neural circuit where the brain regulates inflammation through the vagus nerve. It’s how psychological stress, inflammation, and immune activity stay linked. 1️⃣ The signal starts in the brain The vagus nerve carries electrical impulses from the brainstem to the spleen, the body’s blood-filtering and immune-coordinating organ. 🟢 Example: Deep breathing and meditation can activate the vagus nerve, lowering heart rate and reducing circulating inflammatory markers like CRP and IL-6. 2️⃣ The spleen acts as a relay When the vagus nerve is stimulated, it triggers the splenic nerve to release noradrenaline, which activates immune T cells to release acetylcholine. 🟢 Example: In animal models, vagus nerve stimulation increased noradrenaline in the spleen within minutes, showing how fast the nervous system can modulate immunity. 3️⃣ Acetylcholine calms inflammation This neurotransmitter binds to receptors on macrophages, reducing the release of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), an inflammatory cytokine involved in chronic disease. 🟢 Example: Clinical studies using implanted vagus nerve stimulators in rheumatoid arthritis patients lowered TNF-α levels and improved joint pain without immunosuppressive drugs. The inflammatory reflex shows that inflammation isn’t just chemical, it’s electrical. The brain can literally tell the immune system when to stand down.
