Pre-debate thoughts: NJ-7 is not a starter kit for a national recruit. Rebecca Bennett grew up in Texas, voted in Maryland, and lives in Montgomery Township, which is outside this district. She rented in Bridgewater so the mailers would look local. I live here, I’ve never seen her in a grocery store, or a coffee shop just living her life in the town she claims to live in. In 2016 she requested a Republican primary ballot. The next day she became a Democrat and donated to Hillary. Then she moved here in 2019. Now she wants the seat Tom Kean already holds. Kean lives in Westfield. He flipped this seat. He held it. Bennett’s whole pitch is that he is a “threat to healthcare.” That is a lie. When ACA subsidies were about to lapse, he voted to extend them. He voted to keep Medicaid for the people it was built for and stop ineligible use. His office has returned tens of millions to veterans, seniors, and families stuck with the IRS, VA, and Social Security. That is the job. Bennett’s pitch is a Honda Accord and a Navy story that sounds a lot like Mikie Sherrill’s. The platform underneath it is higher taxes, a public option, restored Medicaid expansion, and a path to citizenship. Fine if that is what you want. Just do not pretend it is moderate or local.
