Pablo Escobar, worth an estimated $3 billion in 1989, had his own prison built, with a waterfall and a football pitch. in 1993 police traced a phone call that ran past two minutes, and he died in a shootout on a rooftop in Medellín. Forbes first listed him among the world’s billionaires in 1987, and in 1989 estimated his wealth at about $3 billion. one estimate put the Medellín cartel’s income at around $420 million a week. his brother Roberto, who kept the books, said the cartel spent about $2,500 a month on rubber bands and wrote off roughly 10% of the cash every year to rats and water damage. his son Sebastián said Pablo once burned about $2 million to keep his daughter Manuela warm while the family hid in the mountains. in 1991 he surrendered under a deal of five years at most and no extradition to the United States. the prison, La Catedral, was built to his own specifications. it had a football pitch, a jacuzzi, a bar, a waterfall and a telescope pointed at his family’s home in Medellín. in July 1992, after reports that he had four of his own men killed inside, the government ordered him moved to an ordinary prison. he refused and walked out through a section of wall built to be kicked open. then came about 16 months on the run, hunted by a 600 man unit called the Search Bloc. by the end he reportedly had no men and no money. he kept in touch with his family by phone, pretending to be a journalist and keeping every call under two minutes. on December 2, 1993, a day after his 44th birthday, one call ran longer. police traced it to a house in Medellín and tried to arrest him. a gunfight broke out, and he died on the roof. how exactly he died is still disputed, and his family says he shot himself. five years in a prison built to his own design: a deal or a joke?

Back in May, Finland told Google in writing that its new AI data center site needed an environmental review. Google kept cutting down the forest there until August. By then the crews had cleared 330 hectares in a town called Muhos. That's about 815 acres, or more than 600 football fields of northern Finnish forest. Here's how it went down, according to regulator documents that Helsingin Sanomat got hold of. Clearing started in March. In late April, Google's Finnish project company asked the regulator whether it even needed an environmental review. On May 22 the regulator wrote back and said yes, this project falls directly under the law. Satellite images show the logging kept going for three more months anyway. The rule itself is pretty specific. If you permanently clear more than 200 hectares of forest in Finland, you need the review first. Google's other site, up in Kajaani, came in at "just under 200" hectares by the company's own count. Make of that what you will. Google's defense is that every tree came down legally under Finland's Forestry Act, and honestly, that part might hold up. Finland logs something like 800,000 hectares of forest every year. Cutting trees there is about as normal as it gets. The catch is what that forestry law assumes. Finland has banned destroying forests since 1866, so if you clear a stand, you're legally on the hook to grow a new one, usually 1,800 to 2,000 seedlings per hectare within a few years. The whole country can log at that scale because every cleared hectare gets replanted. Nine data center buildings are planned for the Muhos site, and nobody's growing a forest back on top of those. The regulator found the topsoil already scraped off and roads already built. Permanent loss like that is exactly what the 200-hectare rule exists to catch, and a University of Helsinki law professor said as much, that following the forestry rules doesn't get you out of the environmental review. Add it up and more than half the Muhos project area was cleared or prepared before the review that's supposed to decide how the thing gets built. It gets messier. The Muhos building inspector told Helsingin Sanomat that Google's lawyers pressured him into signing off on the prep work. Google's Finland boss denies that and has publicly apologized for the clearing. The government ordered the work halted four weeks after Google announced €13 billion for Finland, its biggest investment in Europe. Google's fix so far is a plan to replant 130 of the 330 hectares it cut at Muhos.
Google illegally cleared an estimated 250,000 trees across 330 hectares of forest in Muhos, northern Finland, to prepare for a new AI data center before completing mandatory environmental impact assessments And another 150,000 trees felled at Otanmäki theguardian.com/environment/…

A self-taught programmer from Kazakhstan helped build a company that went from making $20 million a year to making $20 million a week. Jensen Huang made his first ever trip to Kazakhstan this week, and on the same day Nvidia announced it had invested in that company. It's called Higgsfield, and in this clip Jensen calls its founders some of the brightest people in the world. The programmer is Yerzat Dulat, and he runs the models and the training infrastructure. His co-founder Alex Mashrabov had already done this once before. He built AI Factory, the face animation tech behind Snapchat's Cameos, and sold it to Snap for $166 million. Then he ran generative AI at Snap and led the team behind My AI, which got to 150 million users. In late 2023 he texted a friend that he was leaving Snap to build something really big this time, and asked if he knew a great researcher to do it with. That's pretty much how it played out. Annualized revenue was about $20 million in August 2025, $200 million by New Year's, $700 million this August, and over $1 billion in September. Most of the engineering team is in Kazakhstan. Back in January they became the country's first ever unicorn at $1.3 billion, and by August DST Global was paying $5.4 billion. Now put that next to Cursor, which everybody calls the fastest growing software company ever. When Cursor crossed $1 billion in annualized revenue last November, investors valued it at $29.3 billion. Higgsfield crossed the same line with its last priced round at under a fifth of that. Most of that money now comes from companies, too. Businesses were less than a quarter of Higgsfield's revenue in January and they're the majority now. 390 of the Fortune 500 use it, and brands like Dollar Shave Club crank out batches of ad videos every single day, where they used to shoot one for a whole campaign. And Nvidia probably saw all of this coming before almost anyone. Every version of Higgsfield has run on Nvidia chips, from L40s through Hopper and Blackwell, with Vera Rubin up next, and the platform now pushes around 12 trillion tokens a month across 150 million generations. This wasn't a bet Jensen had to make blind. Kazakhstan spent the last month throwing a national AI Month to show the world it can build serious AI companies. Pretty good timing that the guy closing it out had just invested in one.
Jensen Huang: “… the founders of Higgsfield are visionary in the work that they do … but these are some of the brightest people in the world.” We're grateful to Jensen and the teams at NVIDIA and TCV for believing in us. Both companies have joined Higgsfield as investors in our Series B extension. Since our August Series B: • We’ve crossed $1 billion in annualized revenue. • Enterprise contracts are up 71%, growing 100%+ month-over-month • We’ve grown from 30 million to over 40 million users globally. TCV has backed Netflix, Facebook, ByteDance and Spotify, companies that changed how people create and consume media. NVIDIA has powered every generation of Higgsfield, from L40 and A40 GPUs through Hopper and Blackwell, with Vera Rubin next to meet growing demand. Thank you to our creators and customers for building with us every day, and to everyone at Higgsfield whose work brought us here. The full Bloomberg Announcement is linked below.

Cornelius Vanderbilt died in 1877 with $100 million, more money than the U.S. Treasury. In 1973, 120 of his descendants gathered at Vanderbilt University. Not one of them was a millionaire. His great-great-great-grandson is Anderson Cooper. At 14 he was walking up the stairs at home and heard his mother, Gloria Vanderbilt, on the phone: "Well, I'll always be able to make money." "I remember stopping and freezing… and thinking: we are doomed." At 13 he'd been telling her to open a savings account. By 14 he was working as a child model. By 1885 the Commodore's son had more than doubled the fortune, to about $230 million. Then the next generation's wives decided to take over New York society. "And then the spending begins." Worked out. $230 million in 1885. Left alone at a plain 5% a year until 1973: about $17 billion. Split 120 ways: about $140 million each. What the 120 actually had: not one had $1 million. Spending only the 5% would have paid the family $11.5 million a year, in 1885 dollars, forever. Keep this part. A fortune doesn't need a thief. It only needs each generation to spend a little more than it earns, and more heirs to split what's left. Gloria inherited what remained, then made her own money with jeans. Anderson's parents made sure he knew: "There wasn't some pot of gold waiting for me, and I'm glad." The clip is three minutes. Watch him on the stairs, then decide. You have $100 million and one child. How much do you leave them?

False promises to young stars. Scraps of minutes for Shea Lacey despite being a ray of hope in an underperforming squad, and youngsters sent out on loan without minimum playing time conditions. Amongst everybody else, Manchester United are also failing their youngsters! Since Chido Obi’s last match for Manchester United in July, he has played just 48 minutes on loan, playing less than 10 minutes in 4 of his 5 appearances. Ethan Wheatley has only made it off the bench once during his loan spell, for 5 minutes, and that was back in August. This is crucial development time wasted, especially in the case of Chido Obi who came over from Arsenal as one of the most exciting attacking prospects in English football. The Manchester United board should have fought for better conditions and ensured guaranteed game time. Sitting on the bench will have done our young players no good. And it begs the question… is there anything this ownership and board are actually competent at?
