I now understand why lawyers charge so much. People seem to think the way the law should work, according to their conception of the law, is the way it does work rather than the way it actually works.

This morning, I learned about Steeple Mountain on Io and thought, "Somebody is going to climb that." Within about fifteen minutes, I used Sora to generate this. I call it "Because it was there." GenAI is cool.

NASA could do something completely different: “Here are the known locations of the 40 sample tubes on the Martian surface. The first U.S. entity to return ten tubes to Houston gets $3 billion, tax free. Second ten, $2B. Third ten: $1B. Final ten: $500M. A single team is eligible for multiple payments. You figure out how to do it. We aren’t involved in mission planning or execution, but we’ll let you use DSN. And we don’t pay a dime until samples are in Houston.” SpaceX and Halliburton would be racing each other for the $6.5 billion jackpot, and NASA would save $4.5 billion.

Mr. President: it should be “Jill’s and my thoughts are…” Or “Our thoughts are…” Or anything but anything but “Jill and I’s thoughts…” My gosh. RIP Pelé.
For a sport that brings the world together like no other, Pelé’s rise from humble beginnings to soccer legend is a story of what is possible.   Today, Jill and I's thoughts are with his family and all those who loved him.

So something interesting that could be developing at the UN: Ukraine appears to be laying the groundwork to challenge whether the Russian Federation is the legitimate successor to the USSR’s seat and veto on the Security Council

I love my job.
Huge milestone for Skydio, Army, US drone industry. With this Program of Record, up to $99.8M over 5 years, soldiers are getting a world-leading < 3lb autonomous drone, designed and built in the US, something many didn’t think was possible a few years ago. skydio.com/blog/skydio-selec…

The thing I like most about international privacy law issues is that our solution to the fundamental incompatibility between US and EU law is to negotiate an obviously untenable treaty every five years, perpetually to be renegotiated after Schrems n+1 gets it invalidated.

Puzzle: the Large Hadron Collider cost $279 million per mile to build. It has 10,000 superconducting magnets, 96 tons of liquid helium for cooling, and is all custom made. New York City's subway costs between $1.5 to $3.5 *billion* per new mile to build 🤯 5-13x more expensive
