Four hundred fireflies, each blinking at its own slightly different pace, start as random sparkle.
Each one nudges its rhythm toward the flashes it sees. Below a critical coupling nothing happens; above it a crowd suddenly locks, and the whole field blinks as one. The switch is a phase transition, like water freezing.
The model was written down by Yoshiki Kuramoto in 1975 for chemical oscillators. Real fireflies do it too: along some Southeast Asian rivers, thousands of males flash in unison, and early reports of it were doubted for years.
The same maths describes pacemaker cells in the heart and the moment a concert hall's applause turns into clapping in time. In theory the switch sits at K = 1.0 (grey curve), and the crowd needs a little time to follow it.
I've published an article titled "Harmonic Polarity: A Mathematical Idea for a New Way of Understanding Relationships Between Sounds"!
heres a link↓
uriop-dogg.github.io/m2_musi…
The basic idea is simple:
"+" for harmonics
"−" for subharmonics
Using these contributions, I propose a function called Harmonic Polarity, designed to evaluate a kind of "strength of harmonic fusion" at each frequency.
The article introduces this mathematical idea and demonstrates it using simple audio examples.
I also explore extensions of Harmonic Polarity into complex numbers, introducing the Harmonic Polarity Vector and the Harmonic Characteristic Vector.
I hope this article offers a fresh perspective and inspires new ways of thinking about musical perception and the mathematics of music!
Harmonic fusion is a perceptual phenomenon in which harmonics blend together into a unified sound, playing an important role in how we perceive timbre.
I developed this calculation because I wondered:
Could mathematical operations related to harmonic fusion also reveal information about other aspects of musical perception?
For example:
Why do we perceive certain notes as tonal centers?
How does the perceived function of a chord change depending on its musical context?
The article includes only a few examples, but I've also developed web apps that allow you to analyze your own audio and experiment with these ideas.
The apps are introduced in the article, or you can try them directly through the links below!

A 2×2 matrix A makes the plane flow by x′ = Ax, and each flow is one of nine kinds: points sink, escape, spiral, circle or settle on a line.
The kind is set by the eigenvalues of A, the roots of λ² − (tr A)λ + det A = 0. det A < 0 gives a saddle. Above det A = (tr A)²/4 they are complex: spirals, or a centre if tr A = 0. Below it, nodes; on it, star and degenerate node.
The stable spiral here has tr A = −1, det A ≈ 2.65, so λ = −0.5 ± 1.55i.

(Wake)
(Sleep)
(Dreaming)
