What an extraordinary historical own goal. Yes, Ireland played Nazi Germany. So did numerous European countries before the Second World War. And yes, the Irish team gave the Nazi salute in Bremen in 1939, an episode that looks appalling today and shouldn’t be whitewashed. But here’s the part you conveniently forgot. In 1936 it was the German team giving the Nazi salute at Dalymount Park, not the Irish team. Ireland then beat them 5–2. And one of the Irishmen who gave that salute in Germany in 1939 was Johnny Carey. Do you know what he subsequently did? He joined the British Army and fought against Nazi Germany. Nor was Ireland unique in this respect. England and other national teams also gave the Nazi salute or performed similar gestures at matches and official occasions in the 1930s, when sporting exchanges with Nazi Germany were still taking place. That context does not excuse the gesture, but it does make it absurd to present Ireland’s 1939 match as uniquely revealing of some supposed national sympathy for Nazism. So dragging up an 87-year-old football match to smear today’s Irish players is not the devastating historical argument you apparently think it is. More importantly, there’s a breathtaking irony in invoking the Nazis to silence criticism of the actions of a modern government. The lesson of the 1930s isn’t that governments should be immune from criticism because of their national or religious identity. It’s precisely the opposite, states, governments and armies must be judged by what they actually do. Ireland’s players lowering their heads harms nobody. You can dislike it. You can call it disrespectful. But reaching back to 1939 because you can’t cope with Irish footballers expressing disapproval of Israel’s conduct in 2026 isn’t an argument. It’s a diversion. And if your best defence of what Israel is doing today is “but look what some Irish footballers did before the Second World War”, you’ve rather spectacularly conceded the present-day argument. Disgraceful

Hi Ayne, Irish Jew here, daughter of a German born Holocaust surviver. I should be angry at this outrageously stupid and ridiculis post and was tempted to scroll on, with an eye roll, but found I could not. So.. here goes ..I love my country, Ireland, and its people. We Irish "give out" a lot about many things, and rightly so, but when it gets down to the nitty gritty we stick together, love and protect each other. There is a long history of oppression and colonialism in Ireland which allows us Irish to understand the subject pretty darn well. I have many many friends here, most of whom I have no clue of what religion they might or might not practice or even how they vote in elections as that is of no interst to me and its a vice versa thing. The Irish couldn't give a sheit if you are Jewish or not. They do however, give a sheit, if you are blowing children to pieces, commiting genocide and stealing homes and land. The few people who I do know to be Jewish or of Jewish decent, are venimtly anti Zionist, as am I, and can be found on the front lines of Free Palestine marches, even speaking at them. To us..never again means never again.. to any one ..anywhere... ever! I hope that clarifies the issue for you.

Do you think AI is clever enough to know that "make me a picture of Glasgow Celtic fans holding up a banner in support of Israel" is such a ridiculous request that it purposely makes the result so shit and obvious?
Pro-Israel accounts are resorting to making fake, AI-generated pics of football fans supporting Israel. In reality, Celtic FC—a team founded by refugees fleeing a genocide—have been some of the most vocal Palestine supporters anywhere in the world. mintpressnews.com/love-from-…

Yeah communism must be the problem, nothing to do with a certain embargo!!
Life in Cuba breaks my heart. Look at the destruction, the filth, the old cars—this is over 60 years of communism. This is the bullet we dodged. God bless the USA! ❤️🤍💙🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

One no doubt unintended consequence of Nolan’s incessant ballyragging of SF is that exasperated listeners are going out and voting for them in ever greater numbers. The party itself has benefited from boycotting him.
