Last week I took a few hours from my maternity leave to see my students present their last activity as part of the #fieldagronomy class. One of the activities is to spend a day with an agronomist or scout a different crop (other than soybeans). They did a great job!

Why do soybean leaves flip upside-down when it is hot and dry? The underside of the leaf is a more silver colour, which reflects sunlight. This reduces photosynthesis (and the need for transpiration) and temperature stress!

Same field, same spot, 3 weeks later after hail damage. There wasn’t much vegetation left after the hail and now look at the field. It's amazing how well soybeans can recover.

Yellowing soybean cotyledons a symptom of seeding too deep. U of M researcher @kristenpodolsky testing range of seeding depths this year, validating our 0.75-1.5" recommendation.

With some of our customers beginning to wrap up wheat seeding, we've been getting some questions regarding soybean planting. While the forecast does look favorable, keep in mind that the growing point on soybeans is aboveground so they can be susceptible to spring frosts.
