🪸 Using DNA analyses of gut contents, this study shows that two coral reef fish species can adjust their diet when coral reefs decline.

So excited to see this finally out! Two fish species shift diets on degraded reefs; growth rates stayed similar, condition diverged → species-specific coping strategies buff.ly/kGkEDpw @Matt_Leray

📢 Exciting News!📢
Marine Research Plymouth is now accepting project proposals for our fully funded 2025 PhD studentship!
This is a fantastic opportunity to collaborate with experts from @thembauk, @PlymouthMarine, and @PlymUni.

High dietary versatility allows fish to persist on degraded coral reefs but reduced body condition and growth may compromise the maintenance of populations. Responses differ between species. Feedback on #preprint welcome! Led by @Fr_Cle @stri_panama – at Panama

NEW PAPER: Net negative nutrient yields in a bait-consuming fishery doi.org/10.1088/1748-9326/ac… via @IOPscience w/ @JohnDDriscoll
Fisheries are supposed to yield nutrition for people, right?
This US lobster fishery CONSUMES more edible nutrients (via herring bait) than it yields.

Extinction :( One of the world's largest freshwater fish the Chinese paddlefish has just been declared officially extinct - declined from abundance to #extinction over a few decades due #overfishing & #dams - read more about it here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chines… #fish #hydropower 🐟🐟

In today's last keynote, we hear from Prof @ChristinacHicks who talks about fisheries and nutrition, and the societal phenomena behind fish as barely a source of protein - climate change, economic inequalities, and many more!
Here is one of the key takeaways.
Our paper is out @CommsBio disq.us/t/49jkxd5 finding significantly more variable gut microbiomes on degraded reefs in a Caribbean butterflyfish, led by @JSourisse and me /w @Matt_Leray @rfpreziosi @M_helvetiae @phylogenomics & others @stri_panama @MMUEcolEnv @EcolGenLab

The gut microbiome composition of the coral-feeding butterflyfish across Caribbean reefs is more variable at degraded #reefs.
These microbiomes have a lower abundance of Endozoicomonas and a higher diversity of anaerobic fermentative bacteria 🪸🐠

I wish the news was better but we know what we need to do. It’s time we do it!
According to our latest preliminary report, the #MesoamericanReefBarrier is facing an uphill battle in relation to its health status as critical sites has doubled.
