I stepped away from Fireworks Incremental last week to gain some perspective and I decided to try Unity.
It's so much faster to prototype stuff. There's so many cool assets out there. There's 3D. I also took a different approach and tried a different approach to game development with focusing on fun from hour 1.
Here's what I'm going to do:
- finish Fireworks Incremental, release it in Q1 2027
- in the meantime, after hours I'll work on a very small, tiny chill game that I had in mind for almost 2 years now, it will be made in Unity
- moving forward I'll transition to smaller scoped games, I'll prototype more ideas, I'll focus on fun from day 1 instead of building systems for months
Recently I've just been realizing that I made some terrible decisions when it comes to Fireworks Incremental development. I've put in 1200 hours into it and sure, that's partly because making things takes time, but I'd argue that probably at least half of that time was "wasted" on figuring stuff out, building systems, changing them, removing them, adding them back again.
I mean, figuring stuff out is part of the development but I feel like doing a tutorial on particles effects which had fireworks in them and then deciding to make a game out of it might not be the best decision making process, especially when it means committing a year+ of your life to it.
On top of that, Fireworks Incremental or the type of game that it is, is incredibly complex when it comes to game design. There are multiple interconnected systems, as the player progresses new stuff becomes available, you need to make sure it doesn't break the game, you need to make sure it allows for future expansion, it needs to be balanced right, it needs to have a good pacing, it needs to allow for various strategies. Feels like adding new stuff: units, buildings, upgrades, prestige increases the complexity exponentially and I sort of think it's too ambitious of a project for a "first serious attempt" at game dev. I wasn't ready for this. I think that I'm also incredibly emotionally invested in this, which probably isn't healthy. It's hard not to be though after putting so many hours into it.
This is all part of the learning process I guess.
Anyway, I think stepping away from a few days was a good idea. It gave me some perspective and I could do some retrospective thinking and also think about what's next.
As for today, I'm coming back to Fireworks Incremental development.

FRIDAY IS THE BIG ONE!
Steam Next Fest Day 5 is our ALL-DAY DEMO MARATHON!
Starting at 5:30 AM ET. No scheduled end time. TEN indie games lined up, and we're giving each one its chance to shine. No rushing. If a game grabs us, we stay!
Full lineup in the replies!
OK so the dust has settled a bit since the Next Fest started and here are my stats:
I gained 103 wishlists.
To me that's a lot but at the same time it's not exactly what I was hoping for. Frankly it got to me quite a bit. Cat's out of the bag now so I'll try to focus on next things I can control.
Well, the good news is that it seems that the people that do play the demo seem to really enjoy it. So that's awesome. In addition to that, 1450 wishlists is actually quite a lot to me. Bravest Chicken launched with only 578 wishlists so I've already improved as a game developer.
I came to the conclusion that I need to course correct and figure out what's next. The underwhelming Next Fest combined with the simple fact that the game is just not yet ready made me decide that postponing the release is the best thing both for me and for the game.
At this time, I've changed the release date from November 25 to Q1 2027 and I'll try to figure out the exact release plan when I get closer to actually finishing the game. I might also have to reassess how to approach game dev but I haven't figured that out just yet.

1347 wishlists as we're heading into the Next Fest.
I'm excited to see what happens but also quite terrified and stressed.
We'll see how it goes. I'll be sure to post more stats as the Next Fest goes.
Also good luck to everyone participating!

My Steam library is filled with incremental games, and Steam Next Fest is only feeding me more to add to the collection. If you're a fan too, these 10 incrementals should be on your list of must plays this week!
