Picture ordering a pizza on an app. An Indian driver is available. He is competent, reliable, has a clean record, and will get the pizza to you efficiently. A local white teenager is also available. The kid is a bit lazy and less skilled. The white racist still picks the white teenager to deliver it. He would rather have someone from his own group show up at his door than the more efficient Indian. The same logic applies to who he wants living next door. A black man or a Muslim assumes that being a good neighbor will eventually earn him membership in the group. The racist never makes that trade. He is not necessarily hostile. He simply prefers his own.

We took the kids trick or treating in a neighborhood where basically every house left their candy out in bowls unattended. Some of them had individual little gift bags, full sized candy bars, small toys. Everything went great. Nobody took more than their share. It went safely and smoothly. We had a nice time. It also wasnโt a very โdiverseโ neighborhood. I wonder if thereโs a connection.
