In Ireland and Scotland "guising" was the descendant of the Christian tradition of "Souling" that took place on Halloween night 🎃 Whereas their ancestors sought to disguise themselves as animals or the dead to avoid the attentions of fairies and unfriendly departed spirits, children had begun to dress up for fun 🧙🏻 They would call to door to door offering to sing a song, maybe a dance or even to perform a trick for the occupants. A number of theories exist as to when the trick evolved into a prank but certainly the transition had occurred by 1780 as referenced by the Scottish poet John Mayne, in his poem "Halloween". "The youngsters keen Search a' the dark decrees o' fate At Hallowe'en. A' things prepared in order due, Gosh guide's! what fearfu' pranks ensue!" 👻 🍂
