"Of the labels restoring and re-releasing criminally under-seen older flicks, Fun City Editions remains quite possibly my favorite. The sequence of deep-cut titles that founder Jonathan Hertzberg puts out feels like a cinematic mixtape in the best possible way." - @AirMailWeekly

On this date in 1950 Guitarist, Vocalist, Songwriter, Record Producer and Founding member of the Tubes in 1972, John Waldo "Fee" Waybill is born in Omaha, Nebraska. Waybill, along with the Tubes, appeared in Robert Greenwald's Xanadu in 1980, and Lou Adler's Ladies and Gentlemen, The Fabulous Stains in 1982. In the latter film, he played the character Lou Corpse, the washed up frontman of a band called the Metal Corpses. In 1984, a year after the Tubes released 1 of their most successful albums, Waybill released his 1st solo albums called Read My Lips. In 1996, Waybill released another album called Don't Be Scared By These Hands. With the Tubes, Waybill performed as crippled Nazi Dr. Strangekiss, country singer Hugh Heifer, glam rocker Quay Lewd, and punk parody Johnny Bugger. During the early 80s, Waybill appeared as himself on a short lived television program called Rock 'N' America, usually performing as a street reporter who annoyed pedestrians with nonsensical interviews. He also made a cameo in Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure as one of "The 3 Most Important People in the World", and appeared, both acting and performing with The Tubes, in one of the "Fishin' Musician" skits on Second City TV. In addition to his work with the Tubes, Waybill now works as a record producer. He was the producer for a number of pop music artists including singer/songwriter Richard Marx.

Eddie (John Jenkins) & Billy (Chris Mulkey) in PATTI ROCKS (1987). In 1975, they played the same characters in LOOSE ENDS. We made many efforts to release the latter, along w/PR, but there are licensing issues related to music cues & footage from another, very well-known film.

"Positioned between two eras of American filmmaking, [PATTI ROCKS is] the unacknowledged bridge between Cassavetes, Paul Mazursky and Mike Nichols, and the indies that would follow by Steven Soderbergh and Neil LaBute. Fun City Editions has released a superb Blu-ray of the film."

“SPIKE OF BENSONHURST spent close to 40 years as a rumor, barely distributed in 1988. That it now turns up on 4K UHD, restored from the camera negative and surrounded by an hour of interviews with the people who made it, is the kind of thing boutique labels exist to do."
Paul Morrissey's "Spike of Bensonhurst" 4K UHD - Sasha Mitchell, Ernest Borgnine, Maria Pitillo, Maria Pitillo, Anne De Salvo @FunCityEditions US: amzn.to/3UVgI8R CAN: amzn.to/4iEk5uI BONUS CAPTURES: patreon.com/dvdbeaver/posts/… OUR REVIEW: dvdbeaver.com/subsite/film3/… Paul Morrissey's Spike of Bensonhurst (1988) proved to be the last narrative feature from the director of Flesh, Trash and Heat — a cheerfully unruly farewell that swaps Factory-era squalor for the tribal comedy of outer-borough Brooklyn. Sasha Mitchell, in his film debut, is Spike Fumo, a cocky club boxer with a father in prison and an unshakable faith that local mob boss Baldo Cacetti (Ernest Borgnine, gloriously deadpan and Independent Spirit-nominated for it) will sponsor him into the big time. When Spike takes up with Cacetti's daughter Angel (Maria Pitillo), he's exiled to Red Hook, where he sets up with India (Talisa Soto) and her brother Bandana (Rick Aviles) — and promptly makes his life more complicated still. Co-written with playwright Alan Bowne, it's a street-corner comedy of manners about turf, class and sexual bookkeeping, with politics as gleefully incorrect as anything in the Morrissey catalogue. Critics split hard in 1988 — Ebert gave it three stars and called Borgnine's performance the funniest he'd seen in ages, Siskel wrote it off as warmed-over Saturday Night Fever — and it now arrives on 4K UHD from Fun City Editions. *** Spike of Bensonhurst, directed by Paul Morrissey, has spent close to forty years as a rumor - barely distributed in 1988 by a distributor that didn't survive the decade, skipped entirely by the DVD era, kept alive on tape and late-night cable. That it now turns up on 4K UHD, restored from the camera negative and surrounded by an hour of interviews with the people who made it, is the kind of thing boutique labels exist to do. Everything about the setup - the club fighter, the mobbed-up sponsor, the girl above his station, the fixed fight - promises Rocky by way of Saturday Night Fever, and Morrissey builds the machinery only to let it idle. He isn't interested in whether Spike wins; he's interested in the intricate bookkeeping of loyalty, debt and sexual property that governs three square blocks of Bensonhurst, and in what happens when a character who has never questioned any of it is exiled twenty minutes away to Red Hook and discovers the same system running under different management. Sasha Mitchell, a Bruce Weber model in his first film role, is perfectly cast precisely because he plays Spike without a flicker of irony or self-knowledge: the swagger is real, the stupidity is real, and the charm survives both. The film itself remains an argument: uneven, deliberately unbeautiful, politically ornery in ways that will put some viewers off entirely, and - as Morrissey's last narrative feature - the clearest surviving statement of a filmmaker who spent his career being claimed by a counterculture he didn't believe in. The presentation is strong and the supplements are essential rather than decorative. Easily recommended, and Fun City's effort is a candidate for one of the more meaningful catalogue rescues of the year.
