India’s Poverty Reduction Story Is Also a Story of Inclusion
A nation’s development becomes more meaningful when improvements extend beyond its biggest cities and most economically developed regions.
This is what makes the findings on rural India particularly important.
The World Bank’s October 2026 Poverty & Equity Brief highlights that faster poverty reduction in rural areas has helped narrow India’s longstanding rural-urban welfare divide.
By 2023, poverty at the $4.20/day threshold stood at 19.3% in rural areas compared with 8.6% in urban areas.
Although rural poverty remains higher, the progress achieved across villages and smaller communities has contributed significantly to the national picture.
Increasing participation of rural women in paid employment, stronger household consumption and social protection have supported these improvements.
Between 2011 and 2023, approximately 496 million Indians moved above the $4.20/day lower-middle-income poverty threshold.
These findings demonstrate that India’s economic transformation is not limited to metropolitan growth or industrial expansion.
It is also reflected in the improving economic circumstances of households across rural communities.
A stronger and more inclusive India depends on progress reaching different regions and sections of society.
And the World Bank’s findings highlight important gains in that direction.

Sometimes, people can stoop to unimaginable lows.
A friend of mine was laid off about a month ago and has been actively looking for a new job. During his search, he reached out to a former colleague who had worked with him at the same organization, hoping for some support.
Instead of offering a referral, the colleague said he could help with resume building and interview preparation, but for a fee of ₹80,000: ₹40,000 upfront and the remaining ₹40,000 after securing a job.
And just to add some context, my friend isn't a fresher. He is an experienced professional who simply reached out to a former colleague for help during a difficult phase.

The biggest illusion sold to the middle class is that capitalism gives everyone an equal opportunity to become rich if they work hard enough.
Look beyond the slogans. Capitalism rewards ownership of capital far more than the sale of labour. The wealthy own businesses, assets, land and financial instruments. The middle class largely depends on salaries, savings and investments to build wealth.
And wealth doesn't move in a straight line. It moves in cycles.
During periods of abundance, easy credit, rising asset prices and economic expansion, wealth spreads across society. More people participate, take risks and accumulate assets.
But when the cycle reverses, the rules change. Inflation erodes purchasing power. Recessions threaten jobs. Debt becomes expensive. Asset prices collapse. Leveraged investors are forced to sell. Those who depend on salaries and savings often suffer the most, while those with liquidity and access to capital can buy distressed assets at discounted prices.
This is how wealth concentration can accelerate through economic cycles.
The system doesn't necessarily need everyone to remain poor, but it does reward those who own capital disproportionately over those who depend entirely on labour.
The biggest mistake the middle class makes is believing that hard work alone will protect its wealth.
Understand capital rotation. Understand liquidity. Understand who owns the assets and who is forced to sell when the cycle turns.
Because the people who own the ladder are not necessarily playing the same game as those trying to climb it.
BE READY FOR THE SHIFT.

Here are the 5 alternatives worth considering in lieu of current equity LTCG tax which you may kindly review
1️⃣ Zero LTCG tax: Completely exempt long-term equity gains- pre 2018 era
2️⃣ Increase the tax free exemption: From ₹1.25 lakh to 12 lakh annually, which will benefit most of the retail investors
3️⃣ Reduce the long term tax rate: From 12.5% to 5%
4️⃣ Holding period linked taxation:
• Up to 1 year: 10%
• 2 years: 5%
• 3 years and beyond: 0%
And
5️⃣ Avoid taxing FII/FPIs for equity investments
India wants households to move towards financial assets, participate in capital markets and build long-term wealth.
A predictable and investor-friendly tax structure can encourage patient capital and deepen India’s equity culture.

Dear @nsitharaman Madam,
CC: @FinMinIndia, @BJP4Delhi
India wants patient capital, but taxation must reward patience, not penalise it.
Capital is global. It compares returns, risks and tax regimes before choosing where to stay.
India cannot aspire to become a developed economy while ignoring the cost of discouraging long term risk capital.
Tax revenue is important. So is the capital that creates tomorrow’s growth…
Structural reforms earn a government applause. The willingness to revisit flawed policies earns it credibility.
India has the opportunity to attract decades of patient capital. It must ensure its tax policy does not become a reason for that capital to look elsewhere.
Reform is not a one time event. It is a continuous process
Request you consider the above and see the possibility of to revise equity taxation… 🙏
Regards,
Retail Investor
