Africa is not waiting to be rescued from climate risk. It is organising, leading and investing in its own resilience.
Proud that the Africa Adaptation Acceleration Program (#AAAP) is turning high level commitment into real financing for food security, jobs and stronger economies. This is what adaptation at scale actually looks like.
We thank President @WilliamsRuto for hosting this important leaders meeting and for his strong call for partners to step up behind #AAAP2.0. Now the focus is delivery, delivery, delivery.
Africa is stepping into its next phase of climate resilience. Leaders are aligning adaptation, development, and macro-economic stability to unlock resilient growth across the continent.
At the centre of this effort is the Africa Adaptation Acceleration Programme (AAAP), the continent’s flagship platform to scale up climate adaptation while supporting jobs, food security, and public health.
The programme is powered by a strong partnership between the African Union Commission, Africa Development Bank, and the Global Centre on Adaptation, bringing political leadership, finance and technical expertise together to accelerate adaptation at scale.
This partnership is helping align adaptation investment with development finance at a time of tightening fiscal space and rising climate risks.
Convened a virtual Special Africa Leaders’ Meeting on Climate Adaptation for Heads of State and other partners, reaffirming our shared priorities to mobilise concrete partnerships and scale up resilient financing across Africa.
Among those who joined the meeting were Presidents Hakainde Hichilema (Zambia) and Mohammed Al-Menfi (Libya), African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, and former President of Senegal Macky Sall, who is also the chair of the Global Centre on Adaptation Supervisory Board.
Countries represented at the ministerial level included Ghana, Norway, Mauritius and France, among others.

African leaders and partners unite to turn resilience into growth with #AAAP2.0.
Hosted by H.E. President @WilliamsRuto, President of the Republic of Kenya and Chair of CAHOSCC, the Special Africa Leaders’ Meeting on Climate Adaptation reaffirmed that adaptation is central to Africa’s development and growth.
African leaders, partner governments, and regional and international institutions recommitted to the Africa Adaptation Acceleration Program (#AAAP) and its next phase, AAAP 2.0 (2026–2030). Priorities are clear: strengthen institutions, mobilise private finance, unlock resilient markets, and embed adaptation into national development planning. With African leadership and global partnership, AAAP 2.0 will scale solutions that protect livelihoods, strengthen economies, and make resilience a driver of growth across the continent.
We were honored to be joined by H.E. President @HHichilema of Zambia; H.E. President Mohammed Al-Menfi of Libya; H.E. @ymahmoudali, Chairperson of the @_AfricanUnion; and H.E. @Macky_Sall, 4th President of Senegal and Chair of the @GCAdaptation Supervisory Board, as well as instrumental partners of the AAAP including @NEPAD_Agency, France, Norway, Denmark, the Netherlands, the @gatesfoundation, the @IMFNews, the @wto, and the City of Rotterdam.

Productive first meeting of the Africa Business Leadership Group on Adaptation today in Davos. Backed by @wef and @GCAdaptation, this private-sector-led effort is designed to mobilize leadership and scale investment into resilience across the continent.
Africa’s financial, entrepreneurial, and innovation capacity is accelerating. This is the moment for business to turn that strength into a functioning market for resilience solutions — built in Africa, led by Africa.
Our focus is clear:
🔹Financing African resilience with African capital
🔹Positioning Africa as a global market leader in resilience solutions
🔹Securing Africa’s food supply now
Thank you to Trevor Manuel @OldMutualLtd and the CEOs who joined us. Leadership will turn ambition into impact.

Honored to be invited to speak at the @ADSWagenda Summit, alongside Ambassador @PEspinosaC, on why adaptation is urgent, smart, and economic:
1️⃣ Economic growth vs cutting emissions: False trade-off. Resilient growth protects economies.
2️⃣ Global solutions vs local adaptation: Global goals work only with strong local action.
3️⃣ Tech vs warming: Innovation is essential, but it is not a rewind button. We must design for a hotter world as we fight to prevent further warming.
Now we must embed resilience in planning, finance, and business. At @GCAdaptation through the Africa Adaptation Acceleration Program (#AAAP) in partnership with the @_AfricanUnion and @AfDB_Group, we have future-proofed over $20B across some 40 countries.
We must double down on this success as we prepare for the second phase.

This week at #COP30 we launched Stories of Resilience 2025, showcasing #LocallyLedAdaptation in action. From Kibaale District in Uganda to communities worldwide, the message is clear: adaptation succeeds when power and finance shift to those on the frontlines.
In Ringiti, Kenya, I met Dolrose Adhiambo, who earns a living selling smoked fish from Lake Victoria. Her livelihood is under threat from pollution, overfishing, and climate impacts. Her name reflects her story. Dolrose, meaning “rose,” symbolizes her resilience and courage in shaping her community's People’s Adaptation Plan. Adhiambo, meaning “born in the evening,” reminds us we are on the eve of an adaptation revolution.
Through GCA’s People’s Adaptation Plans, communities like hers are mapping risks, setting priorities, and driving real resilience. Grateful to all our partners who contributed to this vital report: llahub.gca.org/articles/a069…

The World Needs a Climate Adaptation Breakthrough at #COP30.
We are on track to overshoot 1.5C, and climate pledges still fall short, leaving the most vulnerable behind. Adaptation is no longer optional. If we rise to the challenge–triple adaptation finance, harness innovation and protect the most vulnerable–then COP30 will be remembered not as the summit where the world lost its way but as the moment humanity turned the tide.

Honoured to speak at the @ACIS2025 today. Africa needs $70 billion a year to adapt — to build resilience and safeguard livelihoods. Current investment falls short.
But YouthADAPT shows what’s possible. Since 2021, this @GCAdaptation-@AfDB_Group initiative has backed 41 youth-led enterprises in 20 countries, creating 11,000 jobs and training 30,000 people.
Today, as we conclude the YouthADAPT Challenge Demo Days in Kenya with @KenyaCIC, I want to send a simple message: Investing in adaptation is investing in Africa’s future.

At the GCA #UNGA80 Leaders’ Dialogue, @BillGates reminded us that real progress relies on two things: innovation and the finance to scale it.
Agriculture is central to adaptation, from better weather prediction to AI-powered tools that help farmers make smarter decisions. Health and agriculture remain priorities for the @gatesfoundation— and they are also at the core of GCA’s commitment to resilience.
Thank you, Bill, for your valuable insights and leadership.

At the GCA Leaders Dialogue at #UNGA80, leaders came together to accelerate adaptation and resilience ahead of COP30. With #AAAP 2.0, we have the opportunity to scale and build on the $25B in investments already delivered in phase one. Today we shared ideas and forged partnerships to advance adaptation across Africa.
Thanks to H.E. President @Macky_Sall, SG Ban Ki-moon, and H.E. Minister @AsmundAukrust for co-convening this critical meeting. Participated at the High-Level Development partners' convening on the Africa Adaptation Acceleration Programme (AAAP) at Serena Hotel, Nairobi. The meeting convened by the @GCAdaptation
brought together members of the diplomatic corps, development partners, private sector and climate experts to take stock of achievements attained by the program and strategize on how to build a stronger AAAP through investment and global partnerships for a climate resilient continent. Noting that Africa contributes the least to the global carbon emissions burden and yet bears the brunt of the climate crisis, impels countries such as Kenya to work hard to mobilize additional resources for adaptation, hence
the indispensability of AAAP 2.0. Ambassador Ali Mohammed, Special Envoy Climate and Cabinet Secretary for Environment and Climate Change Dr. Deborah Barasa also provided insights during the meeting. Grateful also for the presence of @ODG_UNON Zainab Bangura, EU Rep @EUAmbKenya, James Mwangi @KeEquityBank among many others. @Prof_PatrickV @ClimateEnvoyKe @Environment_Ke @ForeignOfficeKE
