Awesome to chat with @USATODAY about our @AnnalsofIM paper which showed that race-based spirometry measures may under-detect lung disease in Black adults. Shout out to the best mentor @RKalhan 🙌🏼. @NM_Lung 🫁
Widely used lung function tests often fail to detect lung disease in Black patients, according to research — and experts are calling for new methods of testing.

If we cancel all student debt, ppl will want medical debt forgiven. If we cancel medical debt, they're going to want free healthcare. If we give them that, they'll want us to house the homeless. Then everyone's going to want a living wage. The whole society will fall apart.

Confronting climate change can be scary. Paralyzing. Hopeless. Really, just not fun.
@ayanaeliza has a simple and effective formula to break out of that vicious circle
Do: 1) things you enjoy 2) things your good at and 3) things that need doing

Excited to share our work in @AnnalsofIM which explores how inequities in COPD relate to spirometry and race-based spirometry equations. Many thanks to my fantastic mentors @RKalhan and @MCarnethon

Important new work by @GLiunit from our group at @NM_Lung out today in @AnnalsofIM re. inequities in #copd prevalence and #lung health —Comparing Racial Differences in Emphysema Prevalence Among Adults With Normal Spirometry | Annals of Internal Medicine acpjournals.org/doi/10.7326/…
Takeaways (pt 1):
1) Substantial proportion of Black men in the US with “normal” spirometry have emphysema on CT
2) Because of how we diagnose COPD using spiro, we likely miss a lot of people (+disproportionately Black men) with impaired lung health and structural lung disease
