BLOG: Does Urgent Care have an identity crisis? The UK Government recently announced a £140 million boost to urgent care alongside a push to end 'corridor care' in Emergency Departments ahead of what is predicted to be an exceptionally challenging NHS winter. This will be welcome news for many, but here's a question: with so many different urgent care services already available, do we risk adding yet more front doors to an increasingly complex and inefficient system? In this week's blog, Dr Will Duffin explores how urgent care has evolved into the sprawling network of providers and facilities it is today. And, despite the mass confusion for patients, why it's still one of the most rewarding areas of healthcare to work in. Plus, he attempts a 'tentative', revised definition of what urgent care actually is in 2026. To read the full article, click here 👉 buff.ly/GEB1fcT

💙 Shining a light on PTSD after childbirth Childbirth can be a traumatic experience, and for some women, the psychological impact can continue long after they've left the delivery room. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) following childbirth is an important area of perinatal mental health, but one that can sometimes go unrecognised. In our latest NB Medical blog, we shine a light on birth-related PTSD and the importance of recognising its impact, particularly for healthcare professionals supporting women during the postnatal period. 📖 Read the full blog here: buff.ly/drJ0KqG

BLOG: Nitrous Oxide Neuropathy: No Laughing Matter Recreational use of nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas, can have serious consequences for neurological health. Nitrous oxide interferes with the body's ability to use vitamin B12, potentially causing nerve damage that can become permanent if left untreated. Symptoms can include tingling or numbness in the hands and feet, muscle weakness and difficulty walking. For healthcare professionals, recognising the symptoms early and asking patients about nitrous oxide use can be crucial in preventing long-term complications. In this informative article, Neal Tucker explores the risks associated with nitrous oxide use, the symptoms to look out for and the importance of early intervention. BLOG: Breaking down barriers - what do we need to know about home HPV testing? You are doing a pill check for Sehasna, a 34-year-old management consultant. During the consultation, you notice that she has never attended for cervical screening. Sehasna is absolutely not alone. With an ongoing decline in uptake, the latest data show that nearly 1 in 3 of those eligible for cervical screening are either behind with screening or have never attended. This ongoing decline in uptake has driven interest in an alternative test to reach and engage this cohort. Cue the rollout of home-testing kits recently announced by NHS England, alongside pilots in Scotland. So, what do we in primary care need to know about home-testing kits? Can Sehasna have one? How do they compare with clinician-administered tests? Read Dr Laura Darby's latest blog to find out: buff.ly/IWY9NYo

🎧 New Podcast: Weight Loss Treatments, Statins in Older Patients and Cancer Detection How effective are the latest weight-loss medications? Should we be prescribing statins to patients over 70? And could a blood test help detect cancer earlier? In the latest episode of NB Medical's Hot Topics podcast, Dr Neal Tucker explores three recent studies published in the New England Journal of Medicine, covering: 🔹 Retatrutide for weight loss: How effective is this injectable treatment, could it offer additional benefits for conditions such as osteoarthritis and obstructive sleep apnoea, and what are the potential downsides? 🔹 Statins in older patients: What does the latest evidence tell us about starting statins in people aged over 70? 🔹 NHS-Galleri cancer trial: Can a multi-cancer early detection blood test improve the stage at which cancer is diagnosed? An interesting listen for GPs and other primary care clinicians looking to keep up with emerging research and its potential implications for clinical practice. 🎧 Listen to the full episode here: buff.ly/TFxQKz3
