A steak and kidney pudding is a pound of beef and half a pound of ox kidney sealed inside a crust made of the fat from around the kidney, steamed in a basin under a cloth for five hours, and when the cloth comes off and the knife goes in, the gravy that has made itself inside runs out across the plate and the whole table leans in.
The crust is suet: the hard white fat that sits round a beef kidney, grated into flour with cold water and nothing else, and it is the fat doing the work. In the steam it does not crisp like a pie lid. It goes soft, dense and slippery, soaked with gravy on the inside and like a dumpling on the out, and a wedge of it on the fork with the meat is the dish. Inside, the shin was cut into cubes and tossed in seasoned flour, the kidney into pieces the size of a thumbnail, both raw, packed in with an onion and a splash of water, and the lid pinched over. No stock, no wine, no granules. Five hours of the cheapest, hardest-working cut on the animal cooking in its own blood and juice with the kidney giving it depth, until it cuts with a spoon.
Mrs Beeton printed it in 1861 and put oysters in with the kidney, because oysters were a penny a dozen and a poor man's meat. The French called the English Les Rosbifs, and the English called it John Bull's pudding. Every pub and chop house in the country had the basins in the copper at eleven, lifted out with a hook, turned onto the plate with a wobble, and the first cut sending the steam to the ceiling. In the mill towns it was Saturday dinner. On the Clyde it was Kate and Sidney. Soldiers in two wars wrote home asking for it.
Every part of it is the animal: the fat in the crust, the shin, the kidney, the gravy made from nothing but themselves. The vegetables arrived in a separate dish and nobody fought over them.
The one in the plastic tub, microwaved for four minutes, is lean diced beef, vegetable suet and a starch sauce, and it tastes of the tub. The real one still exists in a few pubs, with the cloth, and when it comes to the table men of seventy go quiet.
Neil Young has filed a $10 million lawsuit against Donald Trump, alleging copyright infringement over the ongoing use of Young’s song “Rockin’ in the Free World” as the president’s walk-up music at midterm election rallies.
The suit says the classic 1989 song is “a blistering anthem that contrasts the hollow promises of American political rhetoric with the harsh realities faced by the poor, homeless and forgotten. The lyrics pain vivid street-level portraits — a mother discarding her baby, addicts lost in despair, garbage piling in the shadows of prosperity — while the repeated chorus delivers a savage irony, celebrating freedom that clearly isn’t shared by all. In short, the song is the opposite of everything that Donald J. Trump stands for.”

In one day, two politicians - Bolsonaro in Brazil and Vucic in Serbia - with ties to Trump and his family have lost surprise elections, thanks to high turnout. The rise of the international far-right is not inevitable.
I am so excited to share the news that I am joining the board of @Aerobility as a trustee. This is one heck of an organisation - and I'm very, very proud to be a part of it. ✈️✈️✈️✈️✈️✈️✈️✈️✈️
Aerobility is delighted to announce that Flyer and Ambassador Geoff Spink has now joined Aerobility's Board of Trustees. "I can't wait to roll up my sleeves and help the charity to achieve its goal of making aviation accessible to all"

No, @elonmusk, the U.S. stopped funding Ukraine last year. In fact, U.S. companies make money on American weapons for which we Europeans pay.
The more you meddle in our politics and the more you play politics with your products, the more you damage your brand.
Replying to @elonmusk
And some of that US taxpayer money comes back through multiple laundry machines to fund political campaigns in America, which is why you see some politicians caring more about Ukraine than America!

From The Telegraph:
Donald Trump has been threatened with “sanctions” by a judge for refusing to co-operate in the defamation case he has brought against the BBC, court papers reveal.
Judge Enjoliqué Lett rapped Mr Trump on Friday over his lack of co-operation with the court during the discovery process, when each side can compel the other to provide relevant evidence.
The BBC’s lawyers filed five separate motions seeking the US president’s compliance and claimed Mr Trump was having to be dragged “kicking and screaming” to co-operate.
According to the latest filings, submitted on Friday by Judge Lett, “the court has admonished the plaintiff for his lack of participation to no avail”.
“The court expects strict compliance,” he added, “the failure of which will lead to sanctions.” Legal experts warned the president could face having his suit dismissed in the most extreme case.
“Potential sanctions in civil litigation might include award of attorney’s fees and costs and even the dismissal of the plaintiff’s lawsuit,” Jason Sullivan, a lawyer, said.
Dmitry Bam, a professor at the University of Maine Law School, said sanctions could be escalated if Mr Trump continued his defiance.
“That could again include attorney’s fees, fines, treating certain facts as presumed established against Trump, all the way up to dismissing the case. Most judges would only take that last step as a matter of last resort.
“Beyond the case, the court could hold Trump in contempt for violating a discovery order. Even the President must follow ordinary civil procedure rules,” Prof Bam added.
As if there was ever any doubt.
Former Head of MI6 Sir John Sawers, "Russia was very keen that the Leave campaign should succeed and that Britain should leave the European Union"
"Because that would marginalise Britain as a global player and weaken Europe in general"
"That's the strategic opportunity the Russians spotted, and the leaders of the Leave campaign fell into it"
My view: Former MI6 chief Sir John Sawers says Russia saw Brexit as a way to weaken Britain and divide Europe, and that the Leave campaign’s leaders walked straight into the opportunity.
So let’s remember who sold it:
VOTE LEAVE
• Boris Johnson — political figurehead
• Michael Gove and Gisela Stuart — campaign committee co-convenors
• Matthew Elliott — chief executive
• Dominic Cummings — campaign director
• Daniel Hannan — leading Brexit advocate
• Priti Patel, Iain Duncan Smith, Chris Grayling, John Whittingdale and Theresa Villiers — senior Conservative campaigners
• David Davis, Liam Fox, Dominic Raab, Steve Baker and Douglas Carswell — prominent Leave campaigners
LEAVE. EU
• Nigel Farage — leading political figure
• Arron Banks — co-chairman and major funder
• Andy Wigmore — communications director
GRASSROOTS OUT / LABOUR LEAVE
• Peter Bone and Tom Pursglove — Grassroots Out co-founders
• Kate Hoey — Grassroots Out co-founder and Labour Leave campaigner
• Graham Stringer, Kelvin Hopkins and Roger Godsiff — Labour Leave campaigners
• Sammy Wilson — prominent DUP Leave campaigner
They promised Brexit would make Britain stronger.
Sawers says Russia saw the opposite opportunity: a Britain marginalised and a Europe weakened.

I'm really not convinced about the wisdom of asking @michaelgove to co-present at TRIP this past week. His reputation will be forever tarnished because of the damage he helped inflict on the UK during and after #Brexit.
I've been a TRIP subscriber from the beginning
We don't need to hear the bottom of the barrel being scraped to find a co-presenter. I think there are several people out there who would do an excellent job.

Many people ask me how I have dealt with all the attacks and attempts to damage my reputation since February 11, 2024.
At first, I didn’t know if I could get through it, or how.
But over time, I realised that the more they attack me, the stronger I become. Because of you, the Hungarian people.
I started this journey alone, but more and more people have joined us every day. Today, there are millions of us.
And most importantly, we are not doing this for ourselves. We are doing it for our children, our grandchildren and our country.
I know it isn’t always easy, and I know we sometimes make mistakes. But I also know that we are moving in the right direction, towards the right goal.
Thank you to everyone in Hungary who stands with me. Thank you for being part of this journey towards a better, more caring Hungary.
