The Libertarian Alliance on the latest conscription talk from the generals: “consent” to sacrifice means the young pay first. No real invasion threat, a public that largely refuses, and an army already short of kit for the volunteers it has. Full piece: libertarianism.uk/2026/10/18…

Generals want a “frank conversation” about national sacrifice. The Libertarian Alliance replies that the political class spent the money elsewhere for thirty years and now wants bodies. Your war is not my war. libertarianism.uk/2026/10/18…

Half the country, according to Ipsos, will not fight for Britain under any circumstances. The Libertarian Alliance asks why the answer should be conscription rather than competence. Read the full argument: libertarianism.uk/2026/10/18…

The Libertarian Alliance reviews Sabrina Strings’ Fearing the Black Body. The book claims that the modern preference for thinness was produced by the slave trade and Protestantism, and that the fear of the black body created the slender aesthetic. The method is chronological juxtaposition treated as causation. The black body is largely absent. Renaissance Europeans often admired plump black women. For the first two centuries of the slave trade they were either admired for plumpness or despised for smallness. The mockery of fatness in the same period was directed at white men and women.libertarianism.uk/2026/10/21… #Race #LibertarianAlliance
Falstaff, gouty gentlemen, the Countess of Orkney and Rubens’ models were mocked for fatness long before any modern racial theory. The Libertarian Alliance notes that in America the later targets were Irish, Italians and Jews. Only two of Strings’ eight chapters focus on the black body, and one of them admires it. The thesis requires health concerns to arrive late as a rationalisation. Venner warned of corpulence in 1620. Sydenham linked gout to grossness. Actuarial tables in 1912 already recorded higher mortality for the overweight. Large samples increase precision. They do not invent the effect.libertarianism.uk/2026/10/21… #History #LibertarianAlliance
Fatness was mocked in white Europeans for centuries. The identification of fat with black is a recent academic construct. The Libertarian Alliance finds that Sabrina Strings’ book has helped to make it. The sources do not support the claim that the fear of the black body created the slender ideal among fashionable white Americans. Speculation marked “may have” and “likely” is treated as evidence. Factual errors are numerous. The health record is older and clearer than the racial story that has been built upon it.libertarianism.uk/2026/10/21… #Fatness #LibertarianAlliance
The Libertarian Alliance treats the Conservative Party as a waste of time. Adding the Reform and Conservative votes produces a right-wing majority on paper. First-past-the-post will not add them. The parties will attack each other. Labour secured its 2024 majority on about a third of the vote and can do so again. Reform is expected to become the largest opposition and then to dismantle what remains of the Conservatives. Neither is expected to leave the cartel that serves monied interests. Oppositions inherit machinery. They do not dismantle it.libertarianism.uk/2026/10/19… #ReformUK #LibertarianAlliance
Labour is expected to remodel Britain for monied interests: a gradual return to the European Union, partial reindustrialisation for a permanent emergency against Russia, and electoral reform designed to disadvantage the right. The Libertarian Alliance notes that mass immigration will continue. The traditional population is projected to become a minority within the lifetime of children now at school. Ethnic tensions will be managed by authoritarianism from the centre, disguised by further devolution, and by an extension of the controls that already produce more than twelve thousand arrests a year for speech. Most people will self-censor.libertarianism.uk/2026/10/19… #FreeSpeech #LibertarianAlliance
There is no hope to be found in electoral politics. The Libertarian Alliance expects a wave of populist risings across Europe. Revolutions are overrated as instruments of change, but they can split a ruling class and force concessions that opinion polls cannot. Economic impoverishment is not predicted. A growth burst is expected from energy once green targets are abandoned or altered. Political liberty is expected to decline. The remaining work is to analyse who holds power and for what ends, and to leave the analysis for those who come after. The Conservatives are not part of that work.libertarianism.uk/2026/10/19… #BritishPolitics #LibertarianAlliance
The Libertarian Alliance doubts that the British State can fight a prolonged war with Russia. In 1914 Britain was the world’s greatest creditor. In 1939 it still had fixed low-rate debt and foreign investments to sell, and still ran out of money by late 1940. Today the State takes 36 per cent of national income, net debt stands at 94 per cent, and interest costs nearly twice the defence budget. A Government that could not cut taxes without a run on its debt cannot borrow the hundreds of billions a real war would need. Money claims things. The things are no longer there.libertarianism.uk/2026/10/20… #Russia #LibertarianAlliance
Steel output is at its lowest since the Depression. Shell production is negligible. Advanced weapons depend on American components and Chinese minerals. The Royal Navy has a handful of destroyers. The Libertarian Alliance notes that manpower is thinner still. The fertility rate is 1.4. Losing an only son ends a line. About a third of young men were born abroad or are the sons of immigrants. Allegiance does not follow a passport. You are more likely to get young men to die for their mobile telephone company than for the British State. At least the company gives them what they pay for.libertarianism.uk/2026/10/20… #Manpower #LibertarianAlliance
There is no justification for a British war with Russia, and this case would be put every day to an audience of millions. The Libertarian Alliance records that trust in government is at a recorded low. Large numbers of the young say they would refuse conscription even in the face of invasion. Free media cannot be silenced. Organised opposition has already shown that it can tie up police and courts. The ruling class may want the war. It would excuse every past failure and justify new powers. The State no longer has the money, the munitions, the men or the consent. That is an argument for changing the rulers, not for believing the hysteria.libertarianism.uk/2026/10/20… #ForeignPolicy #LibertarianAlliance

The Libertarian Alliance publishes a refusal of General Sir Richard Shirreff’s call for conscription. The former NATO commander joins the chorus of retired generals who want young Britons put through military service for character and resilience. The article sees no invasion threat that would justify it. Russia is occupied in Ukraine. The real dangers are domestic: a government that cannot secure its borders or provide ordinary services, yet seeks more power over the young. Conscription is treated as incompatible with liberty.

The Libertarian Alliance has published a Catholic and libertarian review of Charles Mastroni’s Why Not God? The reviewer shares the author’s faith in the Trinity, the Incarnation and the Resurrection. He finds the book to be two books in one binding. The first is a respectable testimony and moral argument. The second attempts to settle biology, physics and climatology by Scripture. It fails. Religion concerns how one goes to heaven, not how heaven goes. The moral arguments do not require the scientific rebuttals, and are weakened by the attempt to make them depend on those rebuttals.

The TAKES model is sound: every worldview has a theology, an anthropology, a theory of knowledge, an ethics and an account of salvation. The Libertarian Alliance’s reviewer praises the case against relativism and the argument from contingency. Whatever has the power of existence in itself must be eternal. That argument does not depend on any scientific discovery. Idolatry is usefully treated as the elevation of partial truths above God. The political observations—ideological violence, failed communes, grant-driven bias—earn libertarian applause. The scientific chapters do not.

Scripture teaches how one is to be saved, not how the heavens go. The Libertarian Alliance’s Catholic reviewer notes that Charles Mastroni states Genesis is not palaeontology, then claims birds were created as birds and that evolution did not occur. Objections are aimed at theories that are not held. The origin of life is left as an unsolved problem to which faith is made hostage. Historical claims about persecution are overstated. The theological arguments stand without these rebuttals. The attempt to make them depend on the rebuttals weakens both.

The Libertarian Alliance notes that Andy Burnham proposes to convert the triple lock from a statutory duty into a discretion. Section 150A requires the pension to follow earnings. From 2030 it would follow prices or 2.5 per cent unless ministers decide otherwise. The earnings link is law. The rest is a promise. The change is offered as the price of a National Care Service that will not open until the next Parliament. The Office for Budget Responsibility finds only about £6 billion a year by 2040. A comprehensive care service is costed far higher. The claimed saving does not fund the service.

British public finance has no hypothecation. Money not spent on the pension is available for anything else. The Libertarian Alliance lists the larger items: the asylum system, Universal Credit paid to households containing foreign nationals, the rise in health and disability benefits, debt interest, the Bank of England’s indemnified losses, and the planned increase in defence spending. Each exceeds or dwarfs the figure attached to the triple lock. The inference drawn is that the old are to be plundered for rearmament and war, not for a care service whose funding remains inadequate. The reader is left to weigh the inference.

Democracy is important to the politicians who must face it. Actual policy is decided elsewhere. The Libertarian Alliance recalls that the Conservatives promised the triple lock in 2019 and suspended it in 2021. Elections choose teams; they do not convert manifesto clauses into binding contracts. Think tanks have long treated the lock as unsustainable and have offered schemes that amount to looting the old under the name of reform. The statutory protection is being picked. The author, who draws the pension, expects further encroachments. The limits of democracy are the subject, not the secondary complaint about electoral timing.
