What’s your view of public health and specifically COVID in care homes now @Kit_Yates_Maths?
I think it’s mostly being ignored.
Virtually no one tests anymore as COVID is treated by the authorities as a cold.

On AI Burnham hasn’t joined centre left governments in Canada, Australia and the EU to protect people and planet. Britain shouldn’t kowtow to Trump, or take advice from the Oracle-funded Blair Institute, but join progressive democracies to safeguard humankind.
👀NEW Why isn't the UK signing up to global AI safeguards?
(Full details of discussion in the Politics at Sam and Anne's podcast)
This Finnish initiative - pushing compulsory testing of Frontier AI models before release - has the backing of the leaders of Australia, Canada, Germany, the EU, Bahrain and Singapore. presidentti.fi/en/a-call-for… It's dated yesterday 21/9. The UK will have been asked.
But Andy Burnham has not signed - and appears at the UN General Assembly today to be taking a different - arguably weaker - path. Burnham is going to the UN arguing almost exactly the opposite impression: that Britain is uniquely placed to lead international AI governance, mediate between the US and China and make AI a centrepiece of its 2027 G20 presidency.
And there's no mention of Britain backing compulsory pre-release testing of AI, unlike the other countries. The language in the press release is much more watery: he wants to ensure AI is used "for good" but avoids specifics.
This puts us in the same camp as the US and China and a different camp to the EU, Germany and Singapore.
Today in Brighton, Ed Davey will try and make this a dividing line in British politics, calls for a ban on superintelligence. I talked to him about this yesterday. xitter.cf/SamCoatesSky/status/21…

I'm devastated for the family and friends of Jason Arday.
He faced an unacceptable public hounding and campaign of abuse. I know many Londoners will be angry and upset this evening.
Jason Arday was the victim of a pernicious public shaming that other people in his position simply wouldn’t have faced.
His death was a tragedy, but once again it should be a wake up call for all of us.
Giving UK’s NHS data sovereignty to Palantir is like relinquishing your children to adoptive parents with a history of abuse.
Not enough people are aware that Cambridge Analytica and Peter Thiel’s Palantir worked side by side, mining Facebook data in 2016 re the Leave /Brexit campaign
The same Palantir is now in charge of our government's AI system! Also - A new report on NHS costs for the Palantir platform shows lifetime charge rises to £1.1bn on ‘increased delivery at scale’ while forecast benefits fall to £808mn.
Pressure needs to be put on the govt to trigger a 2027 break clause in Palantir’s contract due to concerns about its effectiveness, use of NHS data & their ties to the Trump administration

Disgraceful behaviour. No wonder the public think most British politicians are corrupt (when most are not).
A glorious day for opponents of transparency in public life.
MPs have removed the names of their parliamentary staff from a decades-old public register - meaning we do not know who these people are and are left to accept the word of their employer when they say (as in the case of the prime minister, here) that said staff do not have any outside earnings or private interests.
"All staff have confirmed they have no registrable interests": oh, well that's that then.
No way of determining if true; no way of finding out if MPs employing family members; no way for anyone other than MPs themselves to uphold standards or examine who is operating in the Palace of Westminster on their behalf.
The decision was driven by ... you guessed it ... MPs themselves, following behind-closed-door consultations with staff trade union representatives - not media or anti-corruption organisations.
Echoes of the time that decided among themselves - with nil meaningful debate - to exempt themselves from the centuries-old system by which those arrested would be named before the Commons.
Parliament being sovereign it is always free to take such steps without consultation or engagement with the public - the hope is they decide not to abuse their positions and proactively seek criticism or counter-views.
In this instance, sadly, MPs have demonstrated they cannot be trusted to do so - they have put us out of step with comparable democracies without anything approaching scrutiny:

Peter Murrell has now been exposed as a thief.
However, this SNP scandal exposes deep rot at the heart of the Scottish establishment and a chain of events that ultimately led to the untimely death of Alex Salmond.

Absolutely disgraceful racism from @jkyleofficial on @TalkTV. As the camera zooms in on me and @DrHWazir on the picket line, he sneers that “a lot of them have come into this country to be doctors.” He based this solely on the colour of my skin.
I was born in the UK. I studied and trained in the UK and I currently work as a doctor in the NHS. My grandfather fought for this country in WW2.
This is racist, demeaning, and utterly unacceptable.

The death of Phil Woolas is very very sad. Heartfelt condolences to his wife Tracey Allen & son Josh. I first met Phil when he was producer at C4 News late '80s, and he also worked on Newsnight. Later was an astute & instinctive political operator; superb campaigner for GMB.
