Would we call a Spanish-language immersion school successful if its graduates could barely understand Spanish? We should take the mission of our Catholic schools just as seriously. Academic excellence matters. So does forming students who know Jesus Christ and can understand, articulate and live the faith. Therefore, I am calling for a significant and genuine renewal of Catholic education in the Archdiocese of Portland, beginning in our Catholic elementary schools, middle schools, and high schools and eventually extending to the religious education and faith formation programs in our parishes. I am calling for a renewal of what we call “Mission Passionate Catholic Education. Read more: archdpdx.org/news/go-therefo…

What strikes me most about Bishop-elect Stephen Wang in this lovely video is his understanding of the episcopacy, not as a promotion or an ecclesiastical office to be occupied, but as a call to follow in the footsteps of the Apostles, with all their human frailty, sustained by the grace of Christ. I've had the pleasure of meeting Fr Stephen on several occasions and I think he is a truly wonderful priest. His remarkable Sycamore series reveals something of his particular gift: a profound love for the Catholic faith, combined with the intelligence, warmth & pastoral sensitivity needed to communicate its riches to a generation that often knows so little about Christianity. I was particularly moved by his decision to wear, at his episcopal ordination, the chasuble painted by his mother for his priestly ordination nearly 28 years ago. What a beautiful expression of continuity, vocation and the enduring centrality of Christ. The Church in England desperately needs confident, joyful evangelisation at this moment & I find his appointment really encouraging. Here is a priest who understands that the Church's mission is not simply to manage its institutions, but to bring people into an encounter with Jesus Christ and the transforming beauty of His Gospel. Please pray for Bishop-elect Stephen and for the people of Arundel and Brighton. May his episcopal ministry bear abundant fruit.

ICYMI: Pope Leo XIV’s older brother, Louis Prevost, discussed the pontiff’s reported lung cancer and shares an update on his condition following surgery to @RobFinnertyUSA He said he spoke to the Pope before he went into the surgery but hasn’t spoken to him directly following the news of his diagnosis: “It was quite a shock especially from my younger brother, my youngest brother because I’m undergoing cancer treatment myself..to hear that he had that nodule on his lung it was kind of nerve-wracking, shaky…but speaking to him, you know that’s when he told me..well I said, was it life-threatening, 'no', does it seem serious, 'no, they think it's early enough it's small it should be relatively easy surgery'…so we were all in high-hopes and high spirits hoping for the best. "It sounds like it’s mostly good news", he says. Lou has a type of blood cancer and is being treated in Tampa. Pray for the Pope and his brother Louis 🙏
“I got a message from his right-hand that he was out of surgery, awake, feeling good, and was in no pain.” Pope Leo XIV’s brother, Louis Prevost, reacts to the pontiff’s reported lung cancer diagnosis and shares an update on his condition following surgery. @RobFinnertyUSA

NEW: The Synod's canonical group has published proposals to revise Canon Law 1 change includes having the “entire body of the Christian faithful” included in exercising infallibility Fr Murray warns against it: the Church “does not teach that the People of God enjoy the charism of infallibility in teaching, nor does the people of God exercise the hierarchical teaching authority Christ entrusted to the Apostles and their successors.” Analysis @CatholicHerald

Please pray for the repose of the soul of Dovie Eisner. His brother has reported that he died on Friday, Sept. 11. Please pray for the consolation of his family — especially his devoted parents who have been caring for him. He was in a coma since May 2025. What a dear man. Funny. Brilliant. Courageous. Humble. We miss him. We love him. Eternal rest, my friend. Thank you for all the suffering you endured for the salvation of souls.

Recently I visited the 9/11 Memorial & Museum, hallowed ground bearing witness to loss and courage. As we approach the 25th anniversary, let us pray for all who died, their families, and all still carrying those wounds.
