Thanks to all who joined us on our bus tours last night! Two lively, thought-provoking trips exploring the past, the could-have-beens, and what the future might hold in Dublin. A special thanks to tour guides extraordinaire @brandnewretro and Eileen Coghlan! #giveusthenight

Good to see. A €5 million increase would transform operations within NTE Unit at @DeptCultureIRL where much good work is happening. Without an appropriate budget though, ambition and the scale of change that can be achieved are heavily capped by Govt #giveusthenight
Sinn Féin demands €78m extra for arts and culture in Budget 2027 – @aosnodaigh
"Ambition for Irish culture is desperately needed from Government. Sinn Féin will continue to set out ways to support the artists of today and of the future to build their lives here."

A good deep dive in The Examiner re: Govt's delay to reform nightlife. We also ask if the Department of Justice is the right Dept to oversee licensing? For how long can one department and minister keep us all at standstill? #giveusthenight

Nightlife & gigs were hot vote winning topics in that post Covid era when even the government realised that the culture was important to people for awhile
It’s 5 years on now & it’s largely off the agenda
Greyhound racing gets heavily subsidized btw
Five years ago today the Night-time Economy Taskforce report was published. A fairly clear and coherent set of main objectives. Did the government deliver on all or many of its commitments? Has it made a difference to weekly nightlife and venues? #giveusthenight

Ireland's night-time economy is so important for our cultural & creative communities and our wider economy & society

This wasn't by accident.
In 2000 Govt gave pubs access to the "late-night" market but didn't give clubs the licence extensions needed to create a distinction between the two. The destruction of clubs was initiated by Govt and continues through an ongoing refusal to modernise laws
Replying to @davidmcw
Dublin still has a huge amount of bars per capita, many of them with late bars and live music. People have moved from nightclubs to late night bars.
This was studied in detail by Govt, esp during 2020-2022. And while "the market" has changed, and always will, what hasn't changed are regulations. Is the clearest intervention Govt could make but they (still) won't do it. They're good at promising it though. #giveusthenight

We're sad to hear of Frank's passing. Although we didn't always agree on nightlife policy, we deeply respected his dedication to preserving Dublin's built environment, and for continually sharing his vast knowledge of the city. May he rest in peace.

Ireland's NTE "experiment" is a charade without licensing reform. Good to read insights from those in-the-game and who socialise here.
And Govt parties wonder how to connect with young people? Easy: don't renege on promises and at least plan for them @FineGael @fiannafailparty
A night out in Dublin city centre: ‘This is the capital and come on – we close at 2am!’ irishtimes.com/life-style/pe…
"Tired people don’t cause fights. It’s always the people you’re kicking out that don’t want to go that could cause problems.” - a lot of truth in this: a tired, satisfied customer, is much easier to deal with than someone whose night has been cut short (every weekend in Ireland).
Reads well but what would it mean in practice? What cultural amenities and social options will these areas have, beyond maybe libraries and coffee shops? Don't forget, Govt has recently intervened to remove the 5% cultural + community space requirement for developments like this.
