Is it harder to train a stayer than a sprinter or middle distance horse?
If not, why the constant push to evolve it into something else?
Is it just about managing ownerās expectations and patience needed?
Rather than shorten the race, why not flip the program and have the Derby in March and make current Derby Day headlined by the Australian Guineas, run that at 2000m?
Why not open the VRC Derby to NH-bred 3yo, give them a weight penalty for being half a year older, but keep the distance integrity if Australian breeders donāt value it? The Australian market chases NH-bred stayers already.
If it is so that training stayers is considered harder, will we see a further move away from staying races? We have seen this already with some of the time-honoured staying races on the program, will there be others that happen quickly?
Just a few but there are many more questions that should be asked and answered before flipping 170+ years of history. Iād hate to see this without excruciating detail of what analysis is done.
This is an interesting debate, one which needs to be extremely carefully considered before a decision is made. At this point I can see no compelling argument taking into account the fields that competed in Vase at Flemington or G1 Spring Champion in Sydney on Saturday. Impossible to say the Sydney race was stronger especially given the first 2 home were fillies. Flemington G2 had a full field, while Sydney had a small field despite racing for more money at G1 level.
Also the view offered in article below suggest if derby was shortened the 2 3yos who ran in cox plate would have run there insteadā¦.would they? Also suggests the 3rd in guineas would be in derby, itās been spelled, so I doubt it.
Given the exact race that they are suggesting the derby becomes already exists at G1 level, was run on Saturday with a field that not even the biggest proponent of the change could suggest was in anyway superior to the same G2 race at Flemington on the day, it seems hard to justify when considering this year alone.
Maybe we just have to accept that our juvenile G1 races are not going to meet the current race rating criteria that has been designed by breeders for breeders.
Personally I have no objection to changing the distance of the Derby if there is a real benefit, Iām yet to see anybody make a compelling argument. So at this point Iād say why throw away 150+ years of history on a whim.
One great point in the article, money rather than distance changes thinking. If the Derby was $5m does it matter if itās G1, G2,G3?
Iām sure of one thing the punters who are our customers and fund the industry donāt care.
OāBrien, Waller and Maher weigh in on Victoria Derby distance debate

First time back on a Victorian race track today for 7.5 years. Great to have seen many lovely friends & acquaintances, just a shame that winners chose to avoid me. Overall, was an enjoyable day.
Amazing how often having the field in the last leg of the quaddie sees the favourite winning.

Huge effort by Cosmic Crusader to be up and winning a Bletchingly & Lawrence Stakes so early in the spring period, adding a Turnbull, doing a Caulfield Cup run into Cox Plate and winning. Thatās a proper old school preparation that you donāt see deliver often these days.
Big shout to @boss_glen who pushed heavily for Cosmic Crusader at yesterdayās Ladbrokes Cox Plate Calcutta
Cosmic Crusader, far too strong. Well done to Andrea Leek, William Pike and all involved. A unique Cox Plate winner. Tough as teak.
Makes a good point re the new Moonee Valley.
Replying to @Globalgallop
91 GF at Waverley was a little off too.
Back home next year. I think the new layout will work as the whole track is within your vision.
Win, lose or draw, I genuinely love Sir Delius. Something about him. God I hope he can deliver here.
Any push to eliminate Moonee Valley as a racecourse needs to be resisted by every member of the racing industry.
My view, Cox Plate day at Flemington feels like a missed opportunity. The VRC only care about the four days of next week. The crowd, whatever they post, looks sparse for the traditional championship race of Australia. It would have been better served as an extension of Caulfield for this year. Itās just⦠missing what makes the Cox Plate great.
I may be delusional but McGaw is well over priced on his best form in the opening race at Flemington.
