Excellent work, Carolyn! So glad this is finally out!
New research led by Carolyn Ott, a senior scientist @JLS_Lab, provides the most detailed & comprehensive description yet of cilia in the mouse visual cortex, giving scientists new insights into the formation & function of this small & elusive organelle. 🔗doi.org/10.1016/j.cub.2024.0…

Happy New Year! This one is special for me since my promotion to Associate Professor with tenure @Duke_PCB takes effect today! A giant thank you to all current and former lab members who have ALL done great work over the past 8+ years!

Another giant thank you to the greater cilia/centrosome biology community! It’s been such a welcoming and supportive scientific community going back to when I was a trainee 15+ years ago.

It was so crucial when I was a new PI to know that I could trust my colleagues to fairly (if critically at times) review my work with the goal of making it better, not out of competition or to play games. I look forward to carrying on the tradition of looking after our jr folks.

My New Year’s resolution is to spend more time at the bench and in the mouse room, and less time in my office. Hopefully without making a giant mess!

This was the work of @LoukilLab when he was a postdoc in my lab, former technician Emma Ebright, and our collaborators in @SoderlingLab.

In vivo BioID targeting neuronal cilia started out as a fanciful idea shortly after starting my lab. I'm so glad there were these talented people around who actually made it work!

Hope all my friends and colleagues over at UNC are ok!!

This thread is spot on. What is worse is that some institutions made repeated assurances that no really, they understood what we were dealing with and it would *definitely* not be forgotten when it was time for tenure and promotion. I hoped, rather than believed, it was true 😔
This isn't a new thought, but I'm wondering today how much of the pervasive sense of burnout or disengagement among life science professors today is a sense of soft institutional betrayal for the last three years. That our institutions do not share our morals

This was terrific work by postdoc Jesús Muñoz-Estrada with contributions from former grad student Abe Nguyen.

My lab has an opening for a postdoc! We have lots of exciting projects on the regulation of cilia, and characterizing new ciliary signaling pathways in the brain. Contact me directly to apply and see our ad here: careers.duke.edu/job-invite/…

I'm curious- for those faculty involved with biomedical PhD grad admissions: are you doing in person interviews or virtual? If virtual, does your program plan to do this indefinitely, or just for now? Please also comment if you do a second round that is in person for admits.

17%Virtual forever
28%Virtual for now

Also, I'd be interested in knowing which institutions are doing what if folks care to comment

Happy to be here at #CellBio2022 after 3 years! And very happy to have turned in my tenure materials so I can actually think about other things again!

We are hiring! The Goetz lab has an immediate opening for a research technician. We'd love someone who can start soon, but we'd be happy to accommodate a December grad. Contact me with questions or apply here: careers.duke.edu/job-invite/…

We also anticipate an opening for a postdoc in the new year! No posting yet, but please contact me if interested!

We are committed to the scientific training and career development of our research techs in the Goetz lab. Whether that is applying to grad school, med school, or a different path in science.
