How lucky I am - Each year on this Memorial Day dedicated to remembering those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to this Nation, I stop to ponder just how lucky I am - Too young for the World Wars, Korea and Vietnam, and old enough to have missed the fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan - When I see documentaries on TV, or in particular the first 20-minutes of the movie Saving Private Ryan, I'm left to imagine the utter fear and total confusion that surely consumed so many young soldiers What must have gone thru the mind of that 19-year old kid from Iowa as his landing craft hit the beach in Normandy? - Smoke, death, and unimaginable carnage lay just ahead, yet forward he is asked to go - Or the son of a Tacoma school teacher who, along with a handful of green recruits, set out to roam the Vietnam jungle in search of a deadly and invisible foe - All with the knowledge that of those who began the trek, many would not return - Or the Army Private from Bellingham, forced to leave the relative safety of his mud-filled trench on a battlefield in Europe, and storm toward the enemy - Fully aware that the Germans would counter with a new and brutally efficient weapon known as the machine gun - Knowing of course that most, if not all who were ordered to go, would become yet another casualty of the "Great War" - Still, forward they went - Paralyzing fear on one shoulder, sense of duty on the other and of course, the reaper ever laying in wait I wonder sometimes, if I would have had the courage to storm the beach, roam the jungle, or charge hell-bent toward certain death - I honestly don't know - I like to think so - But until one sits alone in that singular moment in time, with life or death determined by the actions made in the next few seconds, the question will always remain speculation - What I do know however, is that I have an incredible appreciation for the countless souls whose lives were reduced to a singular decision, an instant in time - And because they chose to fight, they chose to run toward hell instead of away, I've enjoyed a life of peace and freedom - So on this day of barbeques and family outings, please take a minute to remember those who died in the fight to make it all possible - And should you know or run across any who have faced the demon and somehow lived thru it all, shake their hand, look them in the eye, and simply say "thank you" - Heroes are they all...
The two club professionals from Washington state that earned spots in the PGA Championship, will not be competing over the weekend. Both Austin Hurt (Bainbridge Island) and Derek Berg (Issaquah) missed the cut after Friday's 2nd round. To give you an idea of how good the top touring professionals are, and how hard the Aronimink golf course is playing, the cut number for the tournament was +4 and the leaders are at -4. Hurt fired rounds of 79, 76 to finish +15, while Berg posted twin 78's to finish +16. Oh by the way, only one of the 20 club professionals competing at Aronimink this week made the cut. A tip o' the cap to Hurt & Berg. Quite an accomplishment to even make the field. Well done fellas!
Craig Ronne, Emerald Valley GC in Creswell, OR. leads the Washington Open Invitational. Ronne fired a 5-under round of 67 to lead by 1 after the first round. I seems the end is near - Saudi Kingdom's wealth fund, the money behind LIV Golf, recently announced it plans to withdraw support from the heavily financed golf tour - LIV Golf is in Mexico this week for a scheduled tournament and there is no word as to what effect, if any the withdraw will have - There is also no word on how the PGA Tour plans to address the issue of the LIV defectors being out of a job. Anyway, good riddance LIV Golf - You won't be missed, by me anyway - And based on your woeful T.V. ratings, the majority of golf fans won't know you're gone

On the eve of the 2026 Masters tournament, I thought I's share a fun fact - 70 years ago, Jack Burk Jr. won his only Green Jacket - He pocketed $6,000 for his efforts - That equates to about $72,000 in today's money - Thanks in no small part to Tiger Woods, the infringement of LIV golf, and big TV revenue, the Green jacket holder this Sunday will pocket 4.2 million clams - But I'm guessing then, as now, the pride and sheer joy in winning perhaps the most prestigious tournament in all the land, far outweighs the money...
The Artemis II crew took the first pics of earth from deep space since the Apollo program - A reminder that we all share this floating, blue orb in the vastness of space - The sooner we start thinking in terms of we, and not I, the sooner we have a chance to save the health of spaceship Earth, and by extension, ourselves - I believe we humans are smarter than letting greed and hubris be the root of our collective demise - How 'bout we start by reducing the amount of poisonous sh** we dump into our oceans and atmosphere - And while we're at it, make clean energy options more of a priority - No brainer concepts in my opinion, yet we can't even seem to agree on these - As I like to say, we don't all need to think alike, but at some point we do need to think...

Simply the most amazing finish to a March Madness game I've ever seen! - If you missed it on Friday, underdog Santa Clara hit a 3-pointer to go up by 3 with 2.4 seconds left - Game over, right? Nay, Kentucky tied the game at the buzzer and went on to win in overtime - WOW!!!!
Since Arnie's tournament is being played this week, a tribute to the King is in order - His imprint and contributions to our great game will live for as long as humans tee it up... To follow live scoring and see video updates of the tournament, see: golfwa.com

GOLD!! The U.S. men's hockey team defeated the Canadians in overtime 2-1 - Outstanding goaltending kept the U.S. in the game as the Canadians put constant pressure on our guys from the 2nd period on. Honestly the Canadians were better, BUT that's why we play the game - USA, USA!!
