Still can’t get over it. 50 years ago Scots threw our own people out of the Indy movement for essentially saying “Scottish” as an ethnic identity should matter to Scottish politics.

Scotland’s black and brown people arguably would have more secure futures in Scotland under even a thing like that than the white colonial supremacist racist garbage that had been brought to Scotland and is all about supremacy of culture and exclusion from politics….

on the basis of race. Letting colonial political authority be the heart of the politics of a colony is just letting racism run rampant. Nothing good can be said of it. The idiots of 50 years ago needed to adapt protections in the face of real moral evil, not tear them all down.

Find out about the women of the 1820 Radical Uprising. Their bravery, their tenacity, their loss of life & limb, & all of them erased from the main history documents because of the way that England recorded what happened & silenced the rest The women - the bedrock of the Uprising

In 1707 Scotland didn't just lose a Parliament. It lost the sovereign institutions through which a very different constitutional tradition had developed - one in which rulers were created for the community, bound by law, and could lose their authority if they broke its fundamental conditions. That tradition didn't disappear. It was cut off from its independent institutional development, and much of its history was subsequently buried beneath a very different story of parliamentary sovereignty. Tomorrow (28 October) on Substack: George Buchanan and the Constitution Scotland Lost What Scottish popular sovereignty actually meant - and what was interrupted in 1707.
