Among peer countries responding to the omicron surge, it appears the US is the only one *not to tighten, but loosen restrictions* by cutting Covid isolation time without the need for test.

Omicron has created a bunch of discussions in my feed that have surprised me. I wanted to get a sense how people view the future. This is about COVID infections, NOT long COVID. In the next 10 years, is COVID going to:
53%Become another cold virus
17%Stay as it has been
23%Evolve into a worse virus
7%Lead to the end of humans

With Delta, everyone needs to be wearing high efficiency masks. N95 respirators that protect against aerosols also protect against droplets. Surgical masks, designed to protect against droplets, do not work well for aerosols. @CDCgov needs to be clear on their mask guidance.

There needs to be truth-telling about the reduced protection of mRNA vaccines vs symptomatic Delta infections. It was 95% pre-Delta. Many are claiming it's still ~80%. It isn't. 50-60% is best estimate from all sources (not US, since we don't have the data)

The constant drumbeat of “breakthrough infections are rare” from experts, while well-intended (supporting vaccination), differs dramatically from the experience of many. They are rare because we aren’t systematically recording them. This has hampered the right message re: masks.

I wrote about the implications of the breakdown at @CDCgov for not tracking breakthrough infections during the Delta wave @guardian theguardian.com/commentisfre… putting millions of vaccinated Americans at unnecessary risk .... and leaving us without a navigational system

Don't give your vaccination a Delta stress test [I should have tm'd that ;-)] —Mask indoors, highest quality, tightest fit —Ventilation & air quality/filtration —Distance whenever possible —Just because people are vaccinated, doesn't mean they can't be pre-symptomatic or carrier

Now Israel and the UK show ~60% efficacy of vaccines against Delta. Now the anecdotal experiences are aligning with the data.

💯 They're not rare w/ Delta; clearly they're increasing, but our pathetic tracking leaves us uncertain as to their true incidence, severity, demographics, time from vaccination, Ct/viral load, neutralizing antibodies. All critical data to know, help prevent, decide re: boosters
I applaud the emphasis on how effective the vaccines still are in preventing severe disease & death. But re: breakthru infections, the continued use of term "rare" by some govt officials & media is creating a don't-believe-what-you-see credibility problem. Uncommon, OK. Not rare.
