Sheffield Wednesday Football Club are delighted to confirm the appointment of Dave Challinor as the club's new First-Team Manager.
Arriving at Hillsborough on a contract until summer 2030, the 51-year-old begins the next chapter of an immensely successful managerial career spanning more than 850 games.
During that time, Challinor has secured multiple promotions and established a reputation for building winning teams, developing players and consistently delivering high standards.
His teams have been characterised by competitiveness and continuous improvement, with Challinor demonstrating an ability to evolve his methods and maximise the potential of his players.
His appointment follows a comprehensive recruitment process involving multiple candidates and has received the unanimous support of the club's Board of Directors.
He will be supported by First-Team Assistant Coaches Clint Hill and Antony Sweeney, who will work alongside the club's existing coaching and performance staff.
Together, the new coaching appointments represent an important step in Wednesday's long-term football strategy, focused on establishing a recognisable playing identity and building a team capable of sustained growth and success.
Sporting Director Simon Wilson said: "Dave was the outstanding candidate following a detailed and comprehensive recruitment process, and we're delighted to welcome him to Sheffield Wednesday.
"His record speaks for itself. He is a proven winner who has consistently built successful teams, improved players and demonstrated an ability to adapt and evolve throughout his career.
"Dave sets exceptionally high standards and challenges everyone around him to improve. He has a proven ability to get more from individuals and teams, and that mentality is central to what we want to establish here.
"We believe there is significant potential within our squad. Our focus is on developing a recognisable playing identity, greater consistency and a team that competes with intensity, organisation and attacking intent.
"Dave understands both the ambition of this club and the work required to achieve it. His appointment is about building something sustainable, not pursuing a short-term solution."
Chairman David Storch added: โDaveโs appointment has the unanimous support of our Board, following a thorough recruitment process expertly led by Simon Wilson, and reflects our shared commitment to the long-term future of Sheffield Wednesday.
โWe are still at the beginning of an ambitious journey. Significant progress has been made in rebuilding the foundations of the club, but we recognise there is much more work ahead.
โOur ambitions remain clear, but our progress cannot be defined by the outcome of one moment or season alone. We must establish a clear footballing identity, consistent standards and a culture capable of delivering sustained success.
โThat journey will require patience, resilience and collective commitment. Progress will not always be straightforward, but we believe Dave has the leadership, character and determination to help us achieve our ambitions.
โWe are delighted to welcome Dave to Sheffield Wednesday and look forward to building the next chapter together.โ

Finally got Oliver to the match today after missing the last few due to his health, and we come out to find someone has stolen his wheelchair accessible vehicle. I realise most people will have been in the ground between 1 & 4, but if anyone saw anything, please let me know #swfc

A remarkable record for Dave Challinor continues ๐คฉ
In 15 full seasons as a manager, the gaffer has never finished below a play-off place ๐คฏ

Fuck off you big wet wipe. Worst side Iโve seen here all season. Iโve seen Wednesday play here 7 times 5 under Pederson. ๐คช๐คช
Also that spat with Baz, Iโd be embarrassed you big daft ๐คก

Iโm Surprised that @McVities havenโt jumped on the sponsorship trial.
Because Iโve never seen a club, have so, so many players made of actual biscuit

Reece James faces 'four to six weeks' out with a groin injury, and there's also an update on Billy Mitchell and Ali Al-Hamadi in here: thewednesdayword.com/p/sheffโฆ #SWFC ๐ฆโฝ๏ธ
That second showed a lot for me, bar one lapse and some iffy keeping. To a man they put in a shift for EACH OTHER.
11-11 we win that comfortably. Not sure whatโs worse today, @BlackpoolFC or them officials.
Blackpool win slightly. Worse side Iโve seen all season.

FFS pipe down you absolute mong.

Bad fit for me.
Seems to be a decisive manager who likes to get his hands across a club, which works really well in non-league, or when you've built a club up into the league and earned that autonomy.
Yet this is the first time Dave Challinor has been appointed at a league club, and it's a goliath.
The politics is more pronounced, you have to be really good at managing upwards, building relationships with the players and fans, bringing people into decision-making processes, and I would worry about Challinor in those areas.
The authority that he rightly commanded at Stockport meant that, when he reportedly demonstrated certain combative, avoidant or unpredictable behaviours - which I'm not here to judge because I recognise managers have to have their way of getting a tune out of players in an intensely competitive environment - it may have been received as normal.
Whereas, you put him in a dressing room with strong characters and big egos, in an environment where he's not a playing legend, he's not a promotion-winning manager at that club, and there's more of an onus on him having to prove himself - I think you'll see a lot more pushback.
Did a terrific job at Stockport, I must say: two titles and constant top seven/six finishes is an excellent return, even with the resources.
Yet based on the fit, I would be surprised if Challinor starts next season still in charge of Sheffield Wednesday.
If a football club.Could ever have made a more, on point ticks all boxes, perfect for our current phase of a re build. Itโs this. Yes he was an obvious choice. But heโs an obvious choice for a reason.
Hats off to arise yet again.
Football people in football positions.
