University of Kentucky scientist trying to solve state’s white oak mystery news.mgcafe.uky.edu/article/…
In 2022, we began a project with an ambitious goal- simulate the effects of climate change in the cloud forest by removing epiphytes from entire trees. I am so excited to see this, our first product, in print! It sure took a village!

My students in Tree Biology are learning about wood structure and function. This white oak core shows large, early-season vessels that move more water when it is abundant and late-season vessels (tiny) that move less water but withstand drought.

Join me on an expedition into the #CloudForest, to unpack research on the delicate plants carpeting the canopy. They're canaries in the coal mine of #ClimateChange and may hold clues for impending change to the forest water cycle. @pulitzercenter @PNASNews pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.24…
It was great to participate in this multimedia project for the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences! The cloud forest is a critical ecosystem for hydrology and biodiversity but doesn't nearly get the press it deserves.

UK's Forest Ecophysiology Lab is representing at the North American Forest Ecology Workshop. I am so proud of these ladies on their first conference presentations! They both knocked it out of the park!

After a year and four months of discussions, prepping, collecting pilot data, and constructing preliminary models, I am happy to say, proposal submitted! Fingers crossed. Back to the trees. – at Guanacaste, Costa Rica
Dawn in the cloud forest. I am in Monteverde, Costa Rica, for a couple of weeks to work with my field team and support two film crews that will be documenting our research project. Stay tuned! @ukyfnr @UKAgriculture #forestry #canopyscience #climatechangeresearch – at Guanacaste, Costa Rica
These fog gauges are up at the top of our study trees and will help us understand how morning fog frequency changes across the Central Appalachian landscape. @ukagriculture @teufelbergertreecare #teufelbergerambassador #teufelbergerscienceambassador

Job alert- Biological Science Technician position is open with the Forest Service doing forest pathology, based right here at U Kentucky! Work with Dr. Tyler Dreaden & the Forest Health Research Education Center (& me!) on a range of exciting projects usajobs.gov/job/704298300
Fog trials on Appalachian seedlings are about to begin!
@UKAgriculture
And now we have begun a photosynthesis campaign. So curious to see how these cloud forest trees will respond to the loss of epiphytes. Check out the climber in the upper left. @UKAgriculture
First stemflow gauge installed! We are also working to understand how a loss of epiphytes will impact water movement through, in and around these canopies. #stemflow #climatechange #tropicalmontanecloudforest #fincabarpe @UKAgriculture @teufelbergertreecare – at Guanacaste, Costa Rica
Ecology professors who love field work- Do you feel you are still able to do the parts of the job you love most? I hope so. #canopyscience #fieldbiology #womenintrees #treefolk – at Guanacaste, Costa Rica
Our tree architecture campaign continues. We are taking these measurements to understand factors influencing epiphyte colonization, following removal. My crew's climbing skills are being pushed to the next level! @UKAgriculture – at Guanacaste, Costa Rica
Happy to see this article in print. It was the result of undergraduate in-class and summer research in collaboration with colleagues at Penn State and led by a post-bacc technician. Go team! #undergradresearch #urbanecohydrology #womeninSTEM sciencedirect.com/science/ar… – at Guanacaste, Costa Rica
Another productive and fun day in the trees in Monteverde Costa Rica. We have completed measurements on four trees for this architecture campaign and have six to go!
