Yes, @durham_uni literally saying a lower % of income spent on staff is better. Our employer's committed to a weird project of profit-maximising in a non-profit, at the expense of the people (staff/students) who are the uni & they claim to serve. Join & participate in your union
This is fun*: Durham has announced an increase in income of £78 million between 2019 and 2022, while also celebrating the fact its reduced proportional spending on staff at the same time. Regarding the latter, we've helpfully been told "lower is better". Literally. *It's not fun

🧵I’m standing for UCU GS because we desperately need change and an industrial strategy that is fit for purpose & equipped to deal with the challenges we face. Over the last year I co-chaired UCU’s Climate & Ecological Emergency Committee (CEEC) with the fantastic @peterrhwood /1

The @UCUAnti_Cas committee at their last meeting took the decision to tweet in support of @UniteUCU's ballot result. Unfortunately the tweet appears to have mysteriously disappeared within minutes, but here's a screenshot
Unite UCU members have today overwhelmingly voted to take strike action in support of their two #PGRsAsStaff colleagues. 71.22% of members who voted backed strike action on a 76.37% turnout.

This is a motion I am submitting to Monday's EGM of @NewcastleUniUCU. I hope it is as calm as can be expected. I think it addresses the key concrete issue at hand (we rejected a weak offer & then had the rug pulled out from under us by @ucu) & offers redress. Happy to discuss.
This is an apology for Newcastle members. We have also emailed every member of the Newcastle branch. We are deeply sorry for this error. The GS has launched a review and we will work to ensure this never happens again.

This government’s strike-breaking agency worker regulations, which allowed agency workers to fill in for those on strike, are quashed as of TODAY. The High Court ruled they were unlawful.

Honestly, I would happily read an essay on how 'moral' has been used by UK HE leaders in the current dispute. It is 'morally wrong' to withdraw marks from students, but morally right - indeed a moral imperative - to withdraw 50% of salary for months on end. 1/2

88 students took #Latin for the Leaving Cert in 2022, compared to 44 in 2021 & 53 in 2020. Not a decline but an impressive rise. @AccessClassics, Aryn Penn & I have written a chapter on #Irish #Classics #education for the forthcoming @dg_classics @GramsciNetwork book.

Posties have been at the heart of our communities for generations. Today, their livelihoods are under threat. Royal Mail is sacking union reps, deducting annual leave and attempting to tear apart our postal service. RT if you stand with @CWUnews 👊

Journalists are asking the union-bashing question ‘Are patients safe in hospital this week?’ when what they should be asking is ‘Are patients ever safe in hospital now as a result of government under-funding?’ NHS staff are the only responsible people here. The government is not.
