I am astounded that this absurd Palau-fronted nicotine prohibition initiative is being taken seriously by what appears to be an expanding cult of drug war ideologues. See my brief comment on the LinkedIn post of its leading proponent, @AshOrg

"Nicotine vaping is one of the most effective ways we have to stop smoking. And it comes at a fraction of the risk of smoking tobacco. That’s a really important public health message.”

100+ NGOs have signed a letter supporting this insane proposal.
You can read it here: ash.org/wp-content/uploads/2…
🌐 A proposal from one small country could change the rules for nicotine worldwide!
The Pacific state of Palau has asked the UN to review whether nicotine should be placed under international drug control, under the 1971 Convention on Psychotropic Substances. The use of controlled substances is largely restricted to medical and scientific purposes. If nicotine were added, every country that is party to the convention would have to change its laws. Including the Czech Republic.
🔬 The first step is a review by the WHO Expert Committee on Drug Dependence (ECDD). Its recommendation then goes to the UN Commission on Narcotic Drugs, which makes the final decision. That is why the evidence the committee receives matters so much.
Nicotine is addictive, and that matters. But it is just as important to assess how individual products differ, how harmful each of them is, how nicotine is used in treatment, and what impact scheduling would have.
⚖️ At RATIO, we have published an analysis of the proposal. It also warns that people could lose access to less harmful alternatives to cigarettes and that the black market could grow.
We recommend that governments involve experts in public health, international law and law enforcement in preparing their submissions, and submit their evidence on time.
The groundwork for later decisions is being laid right now. Those who speak up early have more influence!

Guy in Columbus trying to grab a hopper to the capital of Kentucky and starting to get concerned after an hour in the air
I'd call this the most surprising route announcement of the year.
@Lufthansa just announced new nonstop flights between Frankfurt and... Columbus, Ohio.
It'll operate 3x weekly on the Boeing 787 Dreamliner.
Lufthansa will receive subsidies for the route, but I can't tell how much $ they're getting.
My take: this route will be great for award space. Nothing like the NYC-CMH-FRA routing.

University of Chicago Students to Protest at Chicago Mercantile Exchange, Demand End to Federal Ban on Onion Futures
Student-led group For Our Futures will rally Monday morning to call for repeal of the 1958 Onion Futures Act
On Monday, October 19, at 8:30 a.m., members of For Our Futures, a student-led organization from @UChicago, will gather outside the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (@CMEGroup) headquarters to demand the repeal of the Onion Futures Act of 1958, a nearly 70-year-old federal law prohibiting futures trading in onions.
The Onion Futures Act, enacted following allegations of market manipulation in the 1950s, singled out onions for a prohibition on futures contracts that remains in effect today. For Our Futures is calling on Congress to repeal the ban and restore the ability of onion growers, buyers, and traders to participate in a regulated futures market. Onions remain the only commodity banned from futures trading in the United States.
The protest will feature a giant inflatable onion costume, protest signs, and dozens of students, and will take place outside the headquarters of CME Group, one of the world's largest derivatives marketplaces and the historic center of American onion futures trading.

California appeals court rules weed store not liable for 6-hour panic attack from weed gummy.
A guy took a 10mg Delta-9 gummy and claims he had a panic attack that lasted 6 hours. He went to the ER for "for visual hallucinations, paranoia, anxiety, depression, dissociation, derealization, and depersonalization."
He said he had anxiety, depression, and migraines for years afterward.
He said the weed store employee told him to take half the gummy at first and then the other half an hour later if he didn't feel it.
He alleged that she told him the gummy would treat his anxiety and that she knowingly deceived him by saying so.
Court: "There are no supporting facts in the complaint explaining why or how [the employee or the store] would have known that the alleged representations regarding the cannabis gummy and its suitability to plaintiff’s medical needs and preferences were untrue."

1. that nicotine is the deadly part of cigarettes
2. that so-called SFG works as intended

In an extraordinary session at the World Health Organisation Western Pacific Regional Committee, representatives provided a remarkable admission of how its tobacco-control agenda operates: decide on the policy first, generate the “evidence” to justify it, recruit political allies, and use taxpayers' money to sustain the campaign.

New report: "Use of e-cigarettes for smoking cessation remained common from 2018 to 2023. Perceived lower harm and social exposure were consistently associated with this behavior, highlighting the influence of cognitive and social factors on cessation-related decisions among adults who smoke cigarettes."

In other words: Tell the truth. If you give people who smoke accurate information about the fact that nicotine vaping (and use of other noncombustible nicotine products) is safer than smoking cigarettes, they will be more likely to stop smoking through the use of these products.
